Overview

Senior Energetics Specialist

Astrion has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Energetics Specialist for PST (Propulsion Structures & Technology) Contracts, supporting the Army Division. The Senior Energetics Specialist will be supporting the U.S. Army Development Command (DEVCOM) Aviation and Missile Center (AvMC), Fires Directorate, Energetic Materials Division (MPE) located on Redstone Arsenal, AL neighboring Huntsville, AL. The Senior Energetics Specialist will become a member of highly specialized team in the Energetic Materials Division, supporting the research and development of U.S. Army rocket and missile motors.

JOB DETAILS

LOCATION: Redstone Arsenal neighboring Huntsville, AL

JOB STATUS: Full Time

TRAVEL: Travel could be required up to 10% of the time, as mission dictates.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • Bachelor's of Science (BS) Degree in relevant discipline AND a minimum of 8 years of experience OR 11 or more years of direct, task-related experience without BS Degree.
  • Must be able to perform other on the job training and obtain and maintain additional licenses and certifications, if and as required, such as: certification in handling and transporting Ammunition and Explosives.
  • With proper training and safety measures, must be able to work with and around hazardous materials/propellants/explosives/energetic materials while using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided.
  • Since the job will entail working with hazardous materials, strong attention to detail is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance (U.S. Citizenship is required for all applicants).
  • Must pass an initial drug and alcohol screening and be enrolled in random monthly screening thereafter.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain once employed, a Class C Commercial Drivers' License (CDL) with HAZMAT endorsement to transport Ammunition and Explosives (A&E).
  • Must be able to work in a rugged environment.
  • Ability to participate as a team member.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to use Spreadsheet, Word Processor, Database, & Email.
  • Must be capable of obtaining proper medical approvals for the use of a Respirator, including half-face, full-face, supplied air, and/or self-contained respiratory protection systems.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • Hands-on laboratory experience with hazardous chemicals is highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in the research and development of missile/rocket motors is highly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of initiation mechanisms in energetic materials is a plus.
  • Hands on experience with formulation of propellants, explosives, energetics, and pyrotechnics highly preferred.
  • Experience working directly with government and/or military customers preferred.
  • Background in metal fabrication, welding (plasma, acetylene, and structural) and high-pressure plumbing highly preferred.
  • Experience conducting environmental, chemical, and A&E inventory is a plus.
  • Experience operating test equipment including vacuum pumps, temperature chambers, etc. is a plus.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Senior Energetics Specialist will provide high-level technical, operational, and safety leadership for the research and development of U.S. Army Energetics, which may include rocket and missile propellants, casings, nozzles, and igniters, warheads, and other energetic materials.
  • Accept direct accountability for the execution of technical objectives, formulate technical opinions, design parameters, and operational protocols to ensure the safe and efficient processing of active energetic batches.
  • Direct and perform complex manufacturing operations to include: precision weighing, drying, grinding, mixing, casting, loading, and de-tooling/finishing solid rocket motors.
  • Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot advanced chemical process equipment (vacuum pumps, temperature/environmental chambers, and localized SCADA interfaces) to safely support research facilities.
  • Perform precise scientific calculations for active batch formulations, chemical dosing ratios, volumetric-to-mass conversions, and loss on drying percentage yields.
  • Analyze known and novel formulations and raw materials for sensitivity to impact, friction, and ESD using TB-700 criteria.
  • Preparation of samples and analysis of propellant burn rate using Crawford strand burner.
  • Support high-level scientists and engineers in analyzing, evaluating, and documenting propulsion performance data using analytical software.
  • Establish and maintain comprehensive digital and physical databases to perform exact physical inventories of Ammunition and Explosives (A&E) and hazardous chemicals.
  • Author, update, and implement rigorous Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure 100% compliance with environmental and Army safety directives.
  • The job will entail other duties as assigned.
