Job Description

Computer Systems Engineer – Linux, Controls & Automation
Pay: $85,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
Job description:

We are seeking an experienced Computer Systems Engineer to support the development, integration, configuration, and troubleshooting of computer-based engineering and control systems.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or physics-based technical background who enjoys working closer to the hardware. While software development and scripting are important parts of the role, this is not a traditional web or application development position. The ideal candidate is interested in understanding how computers, networks, software, and electrical/control systems work together to operate real-world equipment.

The position will involve working with Linux-based computing environments, networked systems, automation and control technologies, and software tools used to configure, test, troubleshoot, and support engineering systems.

What You'll Work On

In this role, you may support activities such as:

Configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Linux-based computer systems, particularly Ubuntu and Red Hat environments
Creating, configuring, and deploying operating system images for engineering and operational systems
Troubleshooting issues across the software, operating system, network, and hardware layers
Supporting system hardening, configuration management, and secure deployment of Linux environments
Configuring and troubleshooting computer and network communications between interconnected systems and equipment
Developing scripts and utilities to automate system configuration, testing, diagnostics, and repetitive engineering tasks
Developing and modifying software using Java and Python, with Bash and other scripting languages used for system-level automation
Supporting the integration of software with control systems, PLCs, instrumentation, I/O, and other electrical or electronic equipment
Participating in system integration, laboratory testing, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis
Working alongside electrical, controls, computer, and software engineers to solve multidisciplinary engineering problems
Supporting existing systems through modification, optimization, testing, and troubleshooting rather than focusing exclusively on new application development
What We're Looking For

We are interested in candidates with approximately 5+ years of professional experience as an engineer, computer scientist, software developer, systems engineer, or in a related technical discipline.

Strong candidates will have experience in several of the following areas:

Linux administration and troubleshooting, preferably Red Hat and/or Ubuntu
Operating system configuration, deployment, imaging, and system hardening
Computer networking and network communications
Bash or other Linux scripting
Java and Python development or automation
System-level troubleshooting and root-cause analysis
Hardware/software integration
Electrical circuits, electronics, instrumentation, or computer hardware
Industrial automation, control systems, or Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Laboratory, test, integration, or field-support environments
Experience with every technology listed above is not required. We are particularly interested in technically curious candidates who have a strong computing or engineering foundation and want to expand their experience with Linux, networking, automation, controls, and electrical systems.

Who Would Be a Good Fit?

You may be a strong fit if you started your career in software development or computer science but have found yourself increasingly interested in what happens below the application layer—operating systems, networking, hardware, electronics, automation, and the physical systems that software ultimately controls.

We're looking for someone who enjoys troubleshooting, wants to understand why a system works from end to end, and would rather spend time solving an engineering problem involving computers and equipment than building another web application.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical discipline is preferred.
