Job Description

Job Description

Join a world-class engineering team where cutting-edge technology meets strategic diplomacy. We are seeking a high-caliber Engineering Export Control Subject Matter Expert (SME) to serve as the critical link between the IAS sector program's technical teams and the complex landscape of international law.

In this high-impact role, you won't just be managing paperwork-you will be the strategic architect ensuring that the critical program technical data reaches its international partners securely, legally, and efficiently.

The Mission

As the embedded SME within the Engineering team, you will own the compliance lifecycle for all program activities. From the transfer of sensitive technical data, you are the final word on how teams navigate U.S. and international export control laws (ITAR, EAR) and program-specific security agreements.

You will operate at the intersection of engineering and law, maintaining a strategic bridge between the programs and the Global Trade Compliance team to ensure seamless operational execution.

Your Key Responsibilities

Strategic Ownership: Lead the development, execution, and management of export licenses and agreements. You will ensure every international activity is fully aligned with corporate policies and stringent customer requirements.

Regulatory Translation: Act as the primary interpreter of complex export regulations. You will distill intricate strategic frameworks into actionable guidance for program teams and senior management, enabling fast, informed, and compliant decision-making.

Risk Mitigation: Apply technical knowledge of the IAS programs alongside expert-level ITAR/EAR mastery to identify and neutralize compliance risks before they impact the mission.

Relationship Diplomacy: Build and sustain high-trust, professional relationships with internal stakeholders and external regulatory bodies, positioning the program as a gold standard in compliance.

Who You Are

The Expert: You possess an authoritative command of ITAR and EAR regulations and a proven track record of navigating international trade compliance.

The Strategist: You can see the "big picture" of a global program while maintaining a meticulous eye for the smallest regulatory detail.

The Communicator: You can bridge the gap between technical engineers and regulatory auditors, translating "legalese" into "engineering" and vice versa.

The Partner: You thrive in collaborative environments and understand that trust is the foundation of successful international collaboration.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

Education: Bachelor's degree in International Business, Law, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).

Regulatory Expertise: Professional experience with ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) and EAR (Export Administration Regulations), specifically within the defense industry.

Program Knowledge: Demonstrated technical familiarity with the F-35 program and the associated complexities of its hardware, software, and technical data.

Required Skills:

Export Management: Ability to manage the end-to-end lifecycle of Technical Assistance Agreements (TAAs), export classifications, and the administration of Export Management Systems (EMS).

Technical Translation: Ability to collaborate with engineering teams to differentiate between controlled and non-controlled data and translate technical specifications into accurate regulatory classifications.

Operational Excellence: Exceptional organizational skills with a methodical approach to record-keeping, tracking license expirations, and ensuring zero-leakage of controlled information.

Communication: Strong technical writing skills and the ability to negotiate requirements between engineering teams and government regulators.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
Empowered Official: Expectation is to work towards achieving an empowered official certification during their tenure with the support of BAE Systems.

Compliance Oversight: Experience conducting internal audits and managing license provisos/riders to align business objectives with legal requirements.
