Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Fire Protection Engineer to provide technical oversight of fire protection and life safety systems throughout the design, construction, testing, and acceptance phases of construction projects.

This position is responsible for ensuring critical fire protection and life safety systems are properly designed, installed, tested, and operating in accordance with design intent, contract requirements, applicable codes, and industry standards. The role will perform design reviews, evaluate construction contractor submittals, support testing and inspections, and provide final certification of system acceptability.



Key Responsibilities

Provide technical oversight of fire protection and life safety systems throughout pre-award, construction, testing, commissioning, and final acceptance.
Perform comprehensive reviews of fire protection and life safety design documents, plans, specifications, calculations, and technical reports.
Evaluate designs for compliance with project requirements, applicable codes, standards, and design intent.
Review construction contractor submittals, shop drawings, product data, RFIs, and other technical documentation.
Verify that fire protection and life safety systems are installed in accordance with approved designs and contract requirements.
Coordinate and support inspections, testing, startup, commissioning, and functional performance testing of fire protection and life safety systems.
Evaluate testing and inspection results and identify deficiencies requiring corrective action.
Review system performance and verify readiness for final acceptance.
Prepare technical reports, inspection findings, design review comments, and acceptance documentation.
Provide technical recommendations regarding system deficiencies, compliance, and final acceptance.
Support final certification of fire protection and life safety system acceptability.
Coordinate with architects, engineers, project managers, contractors, commissioning personnel, government representatives, and other stakeholders.
Identify technical risks and potential issues affecting system performance, code compliance, or project acceptance.
Maintain complete and accurate records of design reviews, submittals, inspections, testing, deficiencies, and acceptance activities.


Required Qualifications

10+ years of professional experience in fire protection engineering, fire protection systems, life safety systems, engineering design, construction, commissioning, or a related discipline.
Minimum 5 years of experience supporting pre-award activities for construction projects.


Demonstrated experience with:

Fire protection system design reviews
Life safety system design reviews
Construction contractor submittal reviews
Fire protection and life safety inspections
Testing and commissioning
System acceptance and certification
Bachelor's degree in Engineering.


Education Equivalency

The bachelor's degree requirement may be waived for candidates who possess a Professional Engineer (PE) license.



Required Licensure

Candidates must possess a Professional Engineer (PE) license with examination specifically in the discipline of Fire Protection Engineering.



Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting Federal Government, Department of Defense (DoD), military, healthcare, laboratory, mission-critical, or other complex construction projects.
Experience with fire alarm and detection systems, automatic sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire pumps, special hazard suppression systems, smoke control systems, emergency communications, and other life safety systems.
Experience performing fire protection system inspections, testing, commissioning, and acceptance.
Knowledge of applicable NFPA standards, International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), and Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC).
Experience reviewing fire protection calculations, hydraulic analyses, sequence of operations, and system testing documentation.
Familiarity with integrated life safety system testing and commissioning.
Strong analytical, technical writing, organizational, and communication skills.


Work Locations: Positions may be available at military installations throughout the National Capital Region, including Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Potential locations include NSA Washington, NSA Bethesda, NSA Annapolis, NSF Indian Head, NSF Dahlgren, NAS Patuxent River, Joint Base Andrews, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, NSF Thurmont, and MCB Quantico. Specific location will vary based on project needs.
