Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Systems Engineer to provide technical oversight of mechanical building systems throughout the design, construction, testing, and acceptance phases of construction projects. This position is responsible for ensuring critical mechanical systems are installed, tested, and operating in accordance with design intent, contract requirements, and applicable industry standards.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience performing design reviews, evaluating contractor submittals, supporting inspections and testing activities, and providing final certification of mechanical system acceptability.
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical oversight of mechanical systems throughout the project lifecycle, including pre-award, construction, commissioning, and final acceptance.
Perform comprehensive reviews of mechanical engineering design documents, plans, specifications, and calculations to verify compliance with project requirements and design intent.
Review construction contractor submittals, shop drawings, product data, Requests for Information (RFIs), and other technical documentation for compliance with project specifications.
Verify that mechanical systems are installed and operating in accordance with approved designs, applicable codes, and industry standards.
Support quality assurance and quality control activities related to mechanical systems.
Coordinate and witness mechanical equipment testing, startup, commissioning, functional performance testing, and system inspections.
Evaluate deficiencies identified during testing and inspections and recommend corrective actions.
Prepare technical reports, review comments, inspection findings, and acceptance documentation.
Provide recommendations regarding system readiness and final acceptance.
Support final certification of mechanical system acceptability.
Coordinate with project managers, architects, engineers, contractors, commissioning agents, and government representatives.
Identify technical risks, installation issues, and constructability concerns that may impact project performance.
Maintain complete and accurate records of design reviews, inspections, testing activities, and acceptance documentation.
Ensure compliance with project specifications, applicable building codes, mechanical codes, and engineering standards.
Required Qualifications
10+ years of professional experience in mechanical engineering, mechanical systems, commissioning, quality assurance, construction management, or a related discipline.
Minimum 5 years of experience supporting pre-award activities for construction projects.
Demonstrated experience with:
Mechanical system design reviews
Construction contractor submittal reviews
Mechanical equipment testing and inspections
Commissioning or systems acceptance
Final system acceptance and certification
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Education Equivalency
The bachelor's degree requirement may be waived for candidates who possess a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Candidates must possess one of the following:
Professional Engineer (PE)
Registered Architect (RA)
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting federal, Department of Defense (DoD), military, healthcare, laboratory, mission-critical, or other complex construction projects.
Experience with HVAC systems, chilled water systems, boilers, pumps, air handling units, controls, plumbing, and other mechanical building systems.
Experience with commissioning, TAB (Testing, Adjusting & Balancing), or facility acceptance activities.
Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, construction practices, commissioning processes, and quality management systems.
Familiarity with ASHRAE standards, International Mechanical Code (IMC), UFC criteria, and other applicable industry standards.
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering and construction teams.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.
Work Locations: Positions may be available at military installations throughout the National Capital Region, including Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
