Job Description

Job Number 10669

Standard Job Description

The HWIL Software Integration Engineer (E3) provides technical support for the development, integration, and verification of real-time, closed-loop Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) simulations that combine missile hardware components with high-performance software models. With 3+ years of relevant experience, the incumbent works under senior guidance, contributes to integration strategies, and represents Lockheed Martin to government and industry partners on technical matters.

Core Responsibilities

  • Software Architecture & Strategy
    • Assist in defining and maintaining the software architecture for HWIL test-beds.
    • Support standards for real-time code, low-latency data paths, and deterministic execution.
  • Missile Software & Model Integration
    • Contribute to the integration of missile flight software, guidance algorithms, and sensor models into closed-loop simulation environments (including 6-DOF dynamics).
  • Real-Time Integration & Timing
    • Help ensure latency and timing budgets are met for hardware-to-software interfaces by performing time-domain analysis and jitter budgeting.
    • Implement and verify synchronization mechanisms between missile hardware (actuators, sensors, RF targets) and simulation models on RTOS or FPGA/HPC platforms.
  • Integration & Verification
    • Participate in software-hardware integration activities, debugging interface protocols, timing mismatches, and data-integrity issues.
    • Contribute to verification and validation (V&V) plans, traceability matrices, and validation reports.
  • Hardware Interaction & Test Equipment
    • Apply hands-on hardware skills (RF testing, cable harness checks, target generation) to support software integration.
    • Operate test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum/network analyzers, RF signal generators, and high-speed data acquisition systems.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience: 3+ years in software development, real-time integration, and HWIL environments; demonstrated ability to integrate missile hardware with real-time simulations.
  • Education/Training: Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related STEM field (Master's preferred).
  • Clearance: Active Secret clearance (interim required at start).
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Proficiency in C/C++ and real-time operating systems (e.g., RedHawk, VxWorks, RTLinux).
    • Understanding of low-latency communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, MIL-STD-1553, CAN).
    • Working knowledge of RF testing, target generation equipment, and missile hardware interfaces.
    • Hands-on experience with lab equipment (oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, network analyzer).
  • Leadership & Communication: Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams, communicate technical concepts clearly, and produce quality documentation.

Desired Skills

  • Experience supporting HWIL software integration for missile or aerospace programs, including latency budgeting and timing verification.
  • Familiarity with model-based development environments and code generation for real-time execution.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices for HWIL real-time simulation design.
  • Experience interacting with government customers for test support and issue resolution.
