Position Summary

Operating and maintaining boilers and associated equipment to supply and maintain steam or heat for buildings, or research operations. Maintain accurate records in the boiler log of daily operations, tests, and anomalies encountered. Prepare reports as needed. Work is 24/7 so shift work is required. Will be the Point of Contact for afterhours emergencies and Snow watch, will call out response teams as needed for maintaining after hours emergency response times.

Essential Duties
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment as directed by the Lead or Supervisor.
  • Cleans and maintains heating and steam boilers and associated equipment as required.
  • Maintains a daily Log of metrics gathered, for example, water quality tests, boiler function, safety checks, water and chemical usage. Tests water systems to ensure sample meets specifications, using testing devices.
  • Adjusts controls and observes gauges to regulate heat and steam.
  • Assists Lead to prepare boilers for annual inspections and assist inspectors as needed.
  • Responsible for the health and safety of those working in and around the boilers.
  • Performs routine repairs to burners and auxiliary equipment, using hand and power tools as necessary to keep boilers running as directed by the Lead or Supervisor.
  • Respond to emergencies as needed during your assigned shift.
  • Perform various activities that require considerable use of arms, legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials (i.e. softener salt)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and the ability to read, write, and perform related math.
  • A valid Ohio Driver's License.
  • State of Ohio Boiler Operator's license at the level required for operating boilers of the size located on NASA Glenn RC.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and safety requirements.
  • Knowledge and proper use of PPE.
  • Physical will be required for respirator use.
  • Must adhere to safety and health rules and regulations at all times.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.


Essential Functions

Physical Requirements
  • Works from various heights on ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, man-lifts, cab cranes, suspended platforms or cages, etc.
  • Crouch, stand, kneel, and stoop while installing, repairing, or testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as enclosed switch gear, or in structures such as overhead bus and conduit assemblies.
  • Work above ground from aerial bucket trucks and poles, at ground level, and in trenches, or manholes.
  • Work requires bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for long periods while installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in manholes and on overhead distribution lines. Pushes and pulls heavy objects
  • Use of electrical PPE such as arc flash protection clothing, face shields, high voltage gloves, or other required personal protection equipment.
  • Works in closely confined spaces.
  • Lifts and carries items up to 50 pounds, sometimes up and down stairways, where lifting devices and hoists are not available. lift or pull heavy cables and equipment weighing more than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers
  • Ability to use hearing and vision protection and respiratory equipment.
  • One eye (minimum) correctable to 20/20.
  • Ability to distinguish eight color panel display.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work indoors and out in high and low temperatures and in all types of weather conditions.
  • Work in dusty, noisy, hot, high humidity, dirty, and greasy environment.
  • Work in areas where there may be materials that are irritating to eyes, nose, throat, and skin while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Exposed to danger from explosions of equipment and cables in manholes and vaults, as well as danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, broken bones, cuts, and bruises.
  • Exposed to heat and noise when working in substations or power-generating facilities, to extremes of weather when working outdoors, and to unpleasant odors and wet slippery surfaces when working in manholes.
  • Exposed to chemicals such as insulation oil from transformers and oil switches.
  • Use of protective devices such as earplugs, safety hats, and nonconductive gloves and footwear.
  • Work with other personnel in a group that is Team Oriented.
  • Accept and work within established policies and procedures pertaining to company rules and regulations.


MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT INVOLVED IN WORK TASKS
  • Up to 1½ ton trucks and vehicles
  • Forklifts
  • Manlifts such as JLG, scissor lifts, and Bucket truck, etc.
  • Cranes
  • Mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic hand tools.
  • Ability to become trained on operation of and working in a bucket truck in elevations up to 80 feet for pole line maintenance and installation including tree trimming.
