Job Description

As NOAA moves more of its operational weather infrastructure to the cloud, MRMS needs to move with it. As FWI's MRMS Cloud Computing Architecture Advisor supporting NSSL, you will apply specialized cloud-architecture expertise to guide the optimization of MRMS real-time systems and reanalysis workflows for deployment in commercial cloud environments - advising on deployment pipelines, infrastructure as code, and unit tests that meet NWS Enterprise Cloud development standards. If infrastructure-as-code strategy and cloud cost optimization sound like your kind of Tuesday, this role puts that expertise to work on a mission-critical NOAA product.

Work Schedule and Location:

Hybrid: This full-time hybrid position will work Monday through Friday, 8 AM CST to 5 PM CST, with 90% at National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), National Weather Center, Norman, Oklahoma, or designated field deployment locations.

Responsibilities

  • Apply specialized technical knowledge to advise NSSL scientists and engineers on developing deployment pipelines, infrastructure as code, and unit tests for MRMS systems in the commercial cloud
  • Provide recommendations for meeting NWS Enterprise Cloud development standards, including cloud budget and cost-optimization considerations
  • Advise on and support development of optimized pipelines for running MRMS reanalysis workflows in the commercial cloud
  • Provide technical documentation (e.g., schematics, code repositories, test reports regarding cloud budget impacts) for development activities
  • Prepare quarterly reports of status

Qualifications

Required:
  • BA/BS in a technical or business discipline
  • 4+ years of professional and/or academic experience

Desired:
  • Software programming skills (C++ required, Perl, Python, and Bash preferred)
  • Experience writing software for and using commercial cloud provider services, especially Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure
  • Demonstrated ability to advise technical teams on cloud architecture strategy and cost management
  • Software development experience (Git)
  • Communication skills, including technical writing
  • Ability to work as part of a technical team
  • Familiarity with meteorological datasets, including output from weather radar systems (preferred)

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Primary location: Remote
  • Normal work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day / 40 hours per week, excluding federal holidays; field data-collection activities may require irregular hours during active severe weather events
  • Remote work arrangements must be reviewed and approved in advance by the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR); on-site presence may be required based on mission, field operations, collaboration, or security needs
  • Local and non-local travel may be required, not anticipated to exceed 5% annually; all unplanned travel must be approved in writing by the COR at least 10 calendar days in advance
  • Must complete an online IT security awareness course within one week of starting work
  • Foreign national candidates are subject to export control review and require CO/COR approval prior to consideration
  • Government-furnished equipment provided, including access to HPC resources, specialized mobile observation platforms, laboratory test equipment, computers, and office workspace, as applicable
