SUPERVISORY INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST

Duties

• You will supervise industrial hygiene personnel, assign work based on priorities and employee capabilities, establish schedules, and ensure timely completion of assigned tasks.
• You will evaluate employee performance, provide feedback and counseling, address workplace concerns, recommend personnel actions, and identify and coordinate training needs.
• You will review and approve employee leave, work schedules, time attestations, correspondence, industrial hygiene surveys, exposure monitoring reports, and worker notification letters.
• You will advise leadership on industrial hygiene program resources, performance, deficiencies, and emerging issues, while recommending corrective actions to improve program effectiveness.
• You will manage technical and administrative operations of the industrial hygiene program, ensuring comprehensive, timely, and high-quality services are provided to supported commands and activities.

• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

• Experience applying industrial hygiene practices, conducting sampling, identifying various hazards, and implementing appropriate hazard controls.
• Experience managing and supervising personnel, including scheduling work, monitoring performance, ensuring accountability, and documenting employee performance.
• Experience mentoring and developing personnel, addressing performance issues, and ensuring employees receive required training and professional development.
• Experience reading, interpreting, and applying industrial hygiene guidance and requirements from OSHA, NIOSH, the Navy, and other applicable regulatory and technical organizations.
• Experience preparing, reviewing, and managing industrial hygiene documentation, including surveys, sampling reports, notification letters, and workers' compensation documentation, as well as maintaining records in DOEHRS, the Department of Defense industrial hygiene database.
• Experience anticipating customer needs and delivering high-quality products and services that effectively meet or exceed customer expectations.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

Applicants must possess:

A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science;

or

A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene;

or

Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly (ABIH)).
