Job Description
Senior IT Systems Tester / Business Analyst
Location: Merrifield, VA or Arlington, VA (Onsite, Full-Time) Employment Type: Full-Time Level: Senior Clearance/Contract: Federal Contract Support - Active Secret Clearance Required
Description
We are seeking a senior-level hybrid IT Systems Tester / Business Analyst to support a fast-paced, high-performing federal contract team operating in an Agile environment. This position blends functional application testing (including regression testing) with business analysis responsibilities such as requirements gathering, workflow mapping, and mockup creation. This is a senior role: the candidate is expected to work independently with minimal oversight, exercise sound judgment on ambiguous requirements, and serve as a key point of contact between users, stakeholders, and the technical team.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working directly with end users and stakeholders, and able to translate business needs into clear, testable requirements while also validating that delivered functionality meets those needs. Candidates must be comfortable working with GitHub and Azure DevOps for source control, work item tracking, and sprint management, and must hold an active Secret clearance.
This role requires full-time onsite presence at either our Merrifield, VA or Arlington, VA location and is well suited for someone who thrives in a fast-moving environment with shifting priorities and tight delivery timelines.
Responsibilities
Testing
• Design, execute, and document functional test cases for new features, enhancements, and bug fixes
• Perform regression testing to ensure existing functionality remains intact across releases
• Conduct user acceptance testing (UAT) support, including coordinating test cycles with end users
• Identify, log, track, and verify resolution of defects using the team's issue tracking system
• Validate application behavior against documented requirements and acceptance criteria
• Support test planning, including test case development and traceability to requirements
Business Analysis
• Elicit, document, and refine business and functional requirements through direct engagement with users and stakeholders
• Translate stakeholder needs into clear user stories, use cases, and acceptance criteria
• Create wireframes, mockups, and workflow diagrams to communicate proposed solutions and current-state/future-state processes
• Facilitate requirements sessions, walkthroughs, and demos with users and technical staff
• Maintain requirements documentation and ensure alignment between business needs and development output
• Bridge communication between technical teams (developers, engineers) and non-technical stakeholders
Team Collaboration & Leadership
• Actively participate in Agile ceremonies (daily standups, sprint planning, backlog grooming/refinement, sprint reviews, and retrospectives)
• Manage and track work items, test cases, and defects using Azure DevOps boards and sprint backlogs
• Communicate testing status, risks, and blockers clearly and proactively to the team and leadership
• Collaborate closely with developers to clarify requirements and reproduce/troubleshoot defects
• Independently drive requirements and testing efforts on ambiguous or complex initiatives with limited direction
• Serve as a subject matter expert and escalation point for testing and requirements questions
Required Qualifications
• 7+ years of experience in a combined or overlapping role involving software/application testing and business analysis
• Demonstrated experience with functional, regression, and UAT testing methodologies, including ownership of test strategy and planning
• Proven experience gathering and documenting requirements (user stories, use cases, functional specs) directly with stakeholders, including on complex or ambiguous initiatives
• Experience creating mockups or wireframes (tools such as Figma, Balsamiq, Visio, or similar)
• Experience developing or documenting process/workflow diagrams
• Solid experience working within an Agile/Scrum environment, including familiarity with sprint cycles, backlog management, and ceremonies
• Hands-on comfort with Azure DevOps and GitHub tracking tools (work item tracking, boards, sprint backlogs, test plans)
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise judgment, and manage competing priorities with minimal oversight
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work directly with end users and represent the team in stakeholder discussions
Preferred Qualifications
• Working knowledge of SQL for data validation during testing
• Basic understanding of application architecture, APIs, or system integrations sufficient to support technical discussions
• Experience supporting a federal government client or contract environment
• Experience with defect tracking and requirements traceability matrices (RTMs)
What Success Looks Like in This Role
Within the first 90 days, a successful candidate will have a working knowledge of the application(s) under test, be independently executing test cycles with minimal oversight, and be actively contributing to requirements discussions with users. This person becomes a trusted translator between what users need and what the technical team builds and verifies - someone the team can hand an ambiguous problem to and trust they'll come back with a clear requirement, a mockup, and a test plan.
Work Environment
This is a full-time, onsite position based out of either our Merrifield, VA or Arlington, VA office. The role supports a highly efficient, fast-paced federal contract team where priorities can shift quickly, so adaptability and clear communication are essential
