Benefits:
Principal System Safety Engineer
Work Arrangement: Onsite
Employment Type: Full-Time Contract with Legion Technical Solutions
Industry: Aerospace & Defense
Lead System Safety for Advanced Defense Technologies
Legion Technical Solutions is seeking an accomplished Principal System Safety Engineer to support one of the nation's premier aerospace and defense technology organizations.
This is a senior technical opportunity for an engineer who can do more than perform safety analyses. We're looking for someone capable of **leading System Safety efforts, influencing system architecture, advising program leadership, interfacing with government customers, and mentoring other engineers** throughout the product lifecycle.
You'll work across Systems, Software, Hardware, Electrical, Mechanical, Integration, and Test organizations to ensure safety is engineered into sophisticated defense systems from initial development through production, sustainment, and eventual demilitarization and disposal.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Principal System Safety Engineer, you'll provide technical leadership for one or more comprehensive MIL-STD-882E System Safety Programs.
Key responsibilities include:
* Develop, implement, and lead System Safety Programs compliant with **MIL-STD-882E**.
* Perform and oversee MIL-STD-882 System Safety activities across:
* Lead System Safety Program and design analyses for complex defense systems.
* Analyze system hardware, mechanical and electrical drawings, schematics, interfaces, and architectures to assess:
* Develop concise, technically sound, and testable safety requirements.
* Evaluate existing system requirements for safety implications and compliance.
* Work across Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) to eliminate hazards through design wherever practical and establish effective controls when hazards cannot be eliminated.
* Collaborate with Systems, Software, Hardware, Electrical, Mechanical, Integration, and Test Engineering teams to ensure safety requirements are properly allocated and horizontally integrated.
* Review system test plans, tactical operating procedures, and maintenance procedures to ensure appropriate System Safety controls are incorporated.
* Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and applicable military standards.
* Monitor technical execution of System Safety activities against program objectives and milestones.
* Prepare Safety Assessment Reports, Safety Program Briefs, hazard analyses, and other customer-facing technical documentation.
* Present program safety status, risks, analyses, and recommendations at technical reviews and throughout the formal safety approval process.
* Interface directly with customers, government program offices, approval authorities, subcontractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
* Collaborate with Program Management throughout the entire lifecycle-from program startup and development through production, sustainment, demilitarization, and disposal.
* Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level System Safety Engineers.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate brings significant experience in System Safety Engineering for complex aerospace, defense, or similarly regulated systems and is comfortable operating as a technical leader.
Relevant expertise should include:
* System Safety Engineering
* MIL-STD-882 / MIL-STD-882E
* Hazard identification, assessment, mitigation, and tracking
* System and subsystem hazard analysis
* Safety requirements development and verification
* Hardware and design safety analysis
* Fault tolerance and failure analysis
* Systems Engineering principles
* Technical risk management
* Customer and government interaction
* Technical reviews and presentations
* Cross-functional engineering leadership
This position is particularly well suited for an engineer who understands both the analytical and programmatic sides of System Safety.
Principal-Level Leadership
At this level, technical expertise is only part of the role.
We're seeking someone who can:
* Serve as a trusted System Safety technical resource to engineering and program leadership.
* Make sound engineering judgments when requirements or risks are ambiguous.
* Influence architecture and design decisions based on safety considerations.
* Communicate complex safety issues clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Represent System Safety during customer and government reviews.
* Coordinate effectively across multiple engineering organizations and IPTs.
* Mentor less-experienced engineers and strengthen the team's overall System Safety capability.
* Balance safety objectives with technical, cost, schedule, and program considerations without compromising required safety standards.
What Success Looks Like
Success means becoming a **technical authority and trusted advisor** on System Safety-not simply producing safety documentation.
You'll understand the product architecture deeply enough to recognize hazards and potential failure conditions, determine their significance, and work with engineering teams to develop practical solutions.
You'll help ensure that safety requirements aren't treated as an afterthought. Instead, they are incorporated into architecture, design, test, operation, maintenance, and lifecycle decisions from the beginning.
