Senior System Safety Engineer

Locations:Tewksbury, Massachusetts
Work Arrangement: Onsite
Employment Type: Full-Time Contract with Legion Technical Solutions
Security Clearance: Must be eligible to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance

Help Build Safety Into Advanced Defense Systems

Legion Technical Solutions is seeking an experienced Senior System Safety Engineer to support a leading aerospace and defense technology organization at one of its Massachusetts engineering facilities.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a background in System Safety, Systems Engineering, hardware, software, firmware, or electrical engineering who wants to apply that experience to sophisticated, mission-critical defense systems.

You'll work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and government customers to identify hazards, influence system design, develop effective mitigations, and ensure safety requirements are integrated throughout the engineering lifecycle.

What You'll Be Doing
As a Senior System Safety Engineer, you'll support the development and execution of one or more comprehensive MIL-STD-882E System Safety Programs.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Develop and implement System Safety Programs compliant with MIL-STD-882E
  • Perform System Safety planning, hazard analyses, and design safety analyses.
  • Execute applicable MIL-STD-882 activities across:
    • Task Series 100 - Management
    • Task Series 200 - Analysis
    • Task Series 300 - Evaluation
    • Task Series 400 - Verification
  • Identify potential hazards and work with engineering teams to eliminate them through design or establish effective engineering and administrative controls.
  • Evaluate system requirements, customer specifications, and applicable military standards from a safety perspective.
  • Translate safety objectives into clear requirements and guidance for hardware, software, firmware, systems, electrical, integration, and test teams.
  • Collaborate across Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) to ensure safety considerations are incorporated throughout the system architecture and design.
  • Support technical reviews and brief program safety considerations as part of the formal safety approval process.
  • Prepare internal and customer-facing reports documenting hazard analyses, risk assessments, safety findings, and recommendations.
  • Interface directly with customer safety representatives and government approval authorities.
  • Establish and manage System Safety Working Groups involving key engineering, program, and customer stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Program Management throughout the lifecycle-from program startup and development through production, sustainment, demilitarization, and disposal.

What We're Looking For
We're looking for an engineer who combines strong technical fundamentals with the ability to work across engineering disciplines and communicate effectively with both technical teams and customers.

Relevant experience may include:
  • System Safety Engineering
  • Systems Engineering
  • Software or Firmware Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Hardware Engineering
  • Aerospace or Defense Systems Engineering
  • Hazard identification, assessment, mitigation, and tracking
  • Requirements analysis and development
  • Technical design reviews
  • Safety verification and validation

Experience working with complex systems in a highly structured or regulated engineering environment will be particularly valuable.

Highly Desired Experience
Strong candidates will bring experience in several of the following areas:
  • MIL-STD-882 / MIL-STD-882E
  • DoD System Safety Programs
  • Preliminary and detailed hazard analysis
  • System and subsystem safety analysis
  • Hardware and/or software safety
  • Safety requirements development
  • Risk assessment and hazard mitigation
  • Integrated Product Team environments
  • System Safety Working Groups
  • Customer-facing technical presentations
  • Government or defense acquisition programs

What Success Looks Like
Success in this position means becoming a trusted safety engineering resource to both the program and customer.

You'll be expected to understand the architecture and design well enough to identify meaningful safety risks, communicate those risks clearly, and work collaboratively with engineering teams to develop practical solutions.

The strongest engineers in this environment don't simply document hazards-they **influence the design so that hazards are eliminated or appropriately controlled before they become larger program issues.**

Why Consider This Opportunity?
This position offers the opportunity to work on sophisticated aerospace and defense technologies while developing expertise that is highly valued throughout the defense industry.

You'll have the opportunity to:
  • Work on complex, mission-critical defense systems.
  • Influence system architecture and engineering decisions.
  • Collaborate with experienced systems, software, hardware, electrical, test, and safety engineers.
  • Interface with government customers and technical approval authorities.
  • Develop deeper expertise in **MIL-STD-882E System Safety Engineering**.
  • Support programs across the complete engineering lifecycle.

Work at one of several major Massachusetts engineering locations.
