Job Description

Position Overview:

The Effector Digital Products team is seeking an FPGA Engineer with experience in FPGA development and/or verification to design, develop, and verify high-performance digital systems. Engineers work across major FPGA vendors and device families, including Xilinx, Altera, and Microsemi, with designs primarily implemented in VHDL.

This role supports applications including gigabit serial interfaces, RF and electro-optical (EO) digital signal processing, controls, data links, embedded processing, and processor interfaces. The FPGA Engineer will work closely with circuit card designers and systems engineers throughout the full development lifecycle, from requirements definition and architecture through coding, simulation, integration, testing, and production release.

Key Responsibilities

* Design and deliver production-quality FPGA solutions from initial proof of concept through production.
* Architect FPGA-based systems, including selection of devices, interfaces, and overall Concept of Operations (CONOPS).
* Translate system-level requirements into detailed FPGA requirements and designs.
* Develop and maintain VHDL code with an emphasis on reliability, performance, and maintainability.
* Work collaboratively with systems engineers, circuit card designers, and other engineering disciplines.
* Model and partition algorithms for FPGA implementation.
* Perform simulation, synthesis, place and route, and timing analysis.
* Verify FPGA designs against requirements using directed and constrained-random testing methodologies.
* Develop self-checking verification environments and track functional and code coverage.
* Support hands-on integration, troubleshooting, and system-level debugging.
* Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including requirements, verification plans, design documentation, and user guides.
* Support configuration management and controlled FPGA releases.
* Help drive projects and execute to program schedules, cost, and technical requirements.
* Participate in internal and external technical reviews as needed.
* Provide engineering support throughout integration and test.

Required Qualifications

*Minimum 2 years of relevant experience; 5+ or 8+ years for more experienced levels.
* Experience with digital design and VHDL coding, FPGA development, or FPGA verification.
* Experience with one or more FPGA vendors and associated development tools, including Xilinx, Altera, or Microsemi.
* Experience delivering FPGA solutions for system-level applications.
* Hands-on experience with FPGA integration and debug.
* Ability to interpret system-level requirements and translate them into FPGA requirements and designs.
* Strong understanding of digital design principles and FPGA development processes.
* U.S. Citizenship required due to the nature of the work and the ability to obtain an active security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:

* Radar signal processing techniques
* Image processing for visible and infrared sensors
* Embedded systems using ARM, MicroBlaze, or Nios processors
* Gigabit serial interfaces and multi-gigabit transceivers (MGTs)
* RF or electro-optical digital signal processing
* Constrained-random verification using UVM/SystemVerilog
* Emulation platforms such as Veloce
* FPGA-based embedded processing and processor interfaces

Typical Development Environment

FPGA Engineers may be involved across the complete development lifecycle, including:

Requirements → Architecture → Algorithm Modeling → VHDL Development → Simulation → Synthesis → Place & Route → Verification → Integration & Debug → Production Release**

Experience Levels

**2+ Years:**
Ideal for candidates with foundational FPGA development or verification experience, particularly in digital design, VHDL, FPGA tools, or hands-on integration and debug.

**5+ Years:**
Candidates should demonstrate independent FPGA design experience, system-level application development, verification, integration/debug, and the ability to deliver production-quality FPGA solutions.

**8+ Years:**
Senior-level candidates should have extensive FPGA architecture and development experience, strong system-level design capabilities, and the ability to lead technical execution from requirements through production and integration.
