Senior Back-End Developer

Overview

We are seeking a Java Backend Software Engineer to join a team of developers and cloud engineers responsible for enhancing legacy Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) systems and developing new solutions to support evolving mission requirements.

The successful candidate will develop scalable backend applications, integrate systems through APIs, and support the design and implementation of PKI solutions across multiple networks.

The team operates within an Agile Scrum framework, delivering incremental enhancements on a three-week development cycle. This position requires strong technical skills, collaboration, and participation in ongoing operations and maintenance activities.

What will you do?

• Develop, enhance, and maintain legacy PKI systems while supporting the development of new PKI solutions across multiple networks.
• Design and develop backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), with an emphasis on low-latency, high-throughput distributed systems.
• Develop RESTful APIs to integrate systems and services.
• Analyze and decompose complex software systems and create designs that support scalability, testability, and performance.
• Collaborate with product owners, business analysts, and cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Develop custom scripts to install and configure application code on AWS EC2 instances.
• Create and maintain AWS CloudFormation scripts to support infrastructure deployment and configuration.
• Develop applications and services using Java, JavaScript, and Bash scripting.
• Work with relational databases, including PostgreSQL and MySQL, using SQL or PL/SQL as applicable.
• Utilize XML, JSON, and YAML for application development, configuration, and system integration.
• Work with the team's security engineer to identify, address, and mitigate findings from system security scans.
• Use Git for source code management and collaboration.
• Perform development and troubleshooting activities within Linux environments using the command-line interface.
• Participate in Agile Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and delivery planning.
• Collaborate with developers and cloud engineers to optimize system performance and maintain clear communication across the team.
• Support operations and maintenance (O&M) activities through a rotating team schedule.
• Provide after-hours on-call support approximately one week every three months.
• Adapt to additional programming languages as new systems and mission requirements evolve.

Do you have what it takes?

• Active TS/SCI with Polygraph
• Bachelor of Science (BS) degree and 3-5 years of demonstrable experience.
• Strong working knowledge of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), including digital certificates and Certificate Authorities (CAs).
• Experience developing backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS.
• Experience designing and developing low-latency, high-throughput distributed systems.
• Experience creating RESTful APIs and integrating systems and services.
• Experience analyzing complex software systems and designing solutions for scalability, testability, and performance.
• Experience collaborating with product owners, business analysts, and technical teams to translate requirements into software solutions.
• Experience developing custom scripts to install and configure application code on AWS EC2 instances.
• Experience using AWS CloudFormation.
• Experience with Git for version control.
• Experience working with XML, JSON, and YAML.
• Experience developing applications or services using Java, JavaScript, and Bash.
• Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, including SQL or PL/SQL.
• Strong hands-on experience with Linux command-line environments.
• Experience with Bash and Python scripting.
• Experience addressing and mitigating security findings identified through system security scans.
