Koniag IT Systems, LLC a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking a Senior Application Operations Engineer to support KITS and our government customer Washington, DC. The position is hybrid, requires 1 day onsite. This position requires the candidate to be able to obtain a Public Trust.

The Senior Application Operations Engineer provides expert-level technical engineering and operations support for CLIENT's enterprise application portfolio, integration platforms, middleware, and SaaS environments. This individual serves as a senior technical resource within the enterprise applications and integration team, independently handling complex application engineering tasks, driving platform-level improvements, and serving as a qualified backup to the Applications & Integration Lead when needed.
This role is distinguished from the Applications & Integration Lead by its focus on deep technical engineering and platform-level execution rather than team leadership and program oversight. The Senior Application Operations Engineer brings authoritative subject-matter expertise to complex application incidents, integration challenges, and platform engineering problems, resolving them independently and contributing to the continuous improvement of CLIENT's enterprise application environment.
This individual must demonstrate expert-level technical depth across enterprise application operations, integration engineering, and SaaS platform administration, with the ability to operate autonomously on complex, cross-domain problems and deliver measurable improvements to application reliability, performance, and security in a Federal enterprise environment.

Key Responsibilities:
Enterprise Application Engineering & Operations:
- Provide expert-level engineering and operations support for CLIENT's enterprise application portfolio, including agency-specific business applications, productivity tools, and mission-critical systems
- Independently diagnose and resolve complex, cross-domain enterprise application incidents and problems without escalation to government personnel for subject-matter knowledge
- Lead complex application engineering tasks, including platform upgrades, configuration changes, and performance optimization activities
- Serve as a senior technical resource and escalation point within the applications and integration team for complex application incidents and engineering challenges
- Monitor enterprise application performance, availability, and health, taking proactive engineering action to address issues and prevent recurrence
- Serve as a qualified backup to the Applications & Integration Lead during leave, training, or other absences to ensure 100% coverage continuity
Integration Platform Engineering:
- Provide expert-level engineering and operations support for CLIENT's enterprise integration and middleware platforms, ensuring reliable and well-performing data flows and system integrations
- Lead engineering of complex integrations, interface enhancements, and middleware configurations across CLIENT's enterprise application portfolio
- Diagnose and resolve complex integration failures, data pipeline issues, and middleware incidents independently
- Design and implement integration monitoring, alerting, and automated recovery workflows
- Evaluate integration platform performance and recommend engineering improvements that enhance reliability and reduce operational risk
- Maintain accurate and current integration engineering documentation, including interface designs, data flow diagrams, and configuration records
SaaS Platform Engineering & Administration:
- Provide senior-level engineering and administration support for CLIENT's SaaS platform portfolio
- Lead complex SaaS platform configuration tasks, including security configuration, integration setup, and advanced user administration
- Engineer SaaS platform monitoring and alerting configurations to ensure proactive detection of performance and availability issues
- Support SaaS platform onboarding and offboarding activities, including technical due diligence, configuration, and decommissioning
- Coordinate with SaaS vendors on complex technical issues, platform updates, and security requirements
- Maintain accurate SaaS platform engineering documentation and configuration records
Release & Environment Management Engineering:
- Provide senior technical engineering support for release and environment management activities across CLIENT's enterprise application portfolio
- Lead engineering of deployment automation workflows, CI/CD pipeline components, and environment provisioning processes
- Support design and implementation of non-production environment management frameworks, including environment refresh, data masking, and configuration alignment
- Conduct technical reviews of release packages and deployment plans, identifying and mitigating risk before production deployment
- Coordinate release execution activities with application teams, infrastructure teams, and the Service Management Lead
- Maintain accurate release engineering documentation, deployment runbooks, and environment configuration records
Application Security Engineering:
- Engineer application security configurations aligned with FISMA, NIST SP 800-53, FedRAMP, and CLIENT cybersecurity policies
- Lead implementation of application-layer security controls, including authentication, authorization, encryption, and audit logging configurations
- Support Zero Trust Architecture implementation across enterprise application platforms in coordination with the Microsoft Infrastructure and Network teams
- Conduct application security engineering reviews and provide recommendations for improving CLIENT's application security posture
- Support application vulnerability management activities, including assessment findings analysis and remediation engineering
- Coordinate with the NOC and Microsoft Infrastructure teams on security incidents involving enterprise applications
API Management & Integration Engineering:
- Provide expert-level engineering support for CLIENT's API management platform and enterprise integration services
- Design and implement API configurations, policies, and security controls in the enterprise API management platform
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex API connectivity, performance, and security issues independently
- Maintain accurate API and integration engineering documentation, including API inventories, endpoint configurations, and security policies
- Evaluate API platform performance and recommend engineering improvements that enhance reliability and security
- Support development and maintenance of API governance standards and integration design patterns
Performance Engineering & Monitoring:
- Lead application performance engineering activities, including performance analysis, tuning, and optimization across CLIENT's enterprise application portfolio
- Design and implement application performance monitoring configurations and alerting thresholds in coordination with the NOC and Infrastructure teams
- Conduct application performance assessments and provide actionable recommendations for improvement
- Develop and maintain application performance baselines, SLA metrics, and capacity planning data
- Support site reliability engineering (SRE) practices, including availability monitoring, error budgets, and reliability improvement initiatives
- Provide application performance data and analysis for Sprint metrics reporting and monthly performance dashboards
Agile Delivery & Collaboration:
- Actively participate in Agile Sprint Planning, Daily Coordination, Sprint Reviews, and Retrospectives
- Maintain and contribute to the prioritized backlog for enterprise applications and integration engineering work items
- Deliver committed Sprint work items at or above the 85% completion target
- Provide timely and accurate updates on application engineering status, project progress, and platform improvements to the Applications & Integration Lead
- Contribute actionable improvement recommendations to Sprint Retrospectives based on engineering observations and metrics
Required Qualifications:
Experience:
- Minimum 5-7 years of hands-on enterprise application operations and engineering experience
- Demonstrated experience providing senior-level engineering support for enterprise application portfolios in a Federal or comparable enterprise environment
- Proven experience with enterprise integration platforms and middleware at scale
- Experience with release engineering and environment management for enterprise application portfolios
- Demonstrated experience with SaaS platform engineering and administration in a Federal or comparable environment
- Experience with API management platforms and enterprise integration services
- Proven ability to independently resolve complex, cross-domain application and integration problems at the enterprise level
- Familiarity with FedRAMP-authorized applications and Federal application security requirements
- Experience implementing application security controls aligned with NIST SP 800-53
Technical Expertise:
- Expert-level proficiency in:
- Enterprise application operations, engineering, and administration
- Integration platform and middleware engineering (e.g., MuleSoft, Dell Boomi, Azure Integration Services, or equivalent)
- SaaS platform engineering, configuration, and administration
- API management platform engineering and security configuration
- Application performance monitoring and engineering
- Release engineering and deployment automation

- Application incident management and root cause analysis
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Microsoft 365 and Azure Government application integrations
- REST and SOAP API design, management, and troubleshooting
- CI/CD pipeline engineering and DevSecOps practices
- FedRAMP requirements for SaaS and cloud-based applications
- Zero Trust Architecture principles as applied to enterprise applications
- NIST SP 800-53 security controls for enterprise applications
- ITSM platforms (e.g., ServiceNow)
- ITIL 4 change, incident, and release management practices
- Scripting and automation (e.g., PowerShell, Python, or equivalent)
