Job Description

Duties

  • Conduct research that supports the historical information requirements of the organization and it's affiliated elements.
  • Develop plans, policies, and procedures for data collection for command histories.
  • Represent the organization on historical matters at professional conferences.
  • Manage the organizations historical program to ensure it conforms to professional standard.
  • Serve as the advisor to the commander and staff on all matters of historical precedent.
  • Collect and record historical data from interviews and written content.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance based on a single scope background investigation (SSBI) with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
  • In accordance with Change 3 to AR 600-85, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program, employee must successfully pass a urinalysis screening prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • The employee may be required to work uncommon tours of duty hours, working either fixed or rotating shift which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays. Employee may be subject to recall situations during nonscheduled time periods.
  • This position has a TDY or business travel requirement of 15% of the time to various CONUS and OCONUS locations.
  • The incumbent may be subjected to short notice recall. Must reside within 50-miles of duty location.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical, must be able to lift 50 pounds

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

Basic Requirement for Historian:

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing a historical archive program for an assigned organization; researching historical data to incorporate in products for publication and briefings; utilizing an electronic and hard copy archival system to document historical information; and identifying trends in historical findings that relate to operational programs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-13).
