Job Description
Mission Solutions Group (MSG) is seeking a Software Safety Engineer with strong experience in MIL-STD-882E, software/system safety, hazard analysis, and safety-critical embedded software to support the PME CBAD/Kestros program.
This role is ideal for an experienced defense or aerospace engineer who understands how software behavior contributes to system-level hazards and can carry a safety program from hazard identification through mitigation, verification, residual risk assessment, and formal government review.
What You'll Do
Execute software and system safety activities in accordance with MIL-STD-882E throughout the system lifecycle.
Perform FHA, SSHA, FTA, and Software Hazard Analysis (SWHA) to identify system- and code-level hazards.
Translate hazards into functional, non-functional, and software-specific safety requirements and design constraints.
Establish and maintain bidirectional safety requirement traceability through verification and validation.
Review embedded C/C++ code, software architectures, and interfaces for safety-critical faults, including race conditions, memory leaks, interface failures, and logic errors.
Manage hazard tracking, including causal factors, Level of Rigor (LOR) tasks, mitigations, verification evidence, and residual risk.
Develop System Safety Program Plans (SSPP), Software Safety Plans, Safety Assessment Reports (SAR), and supporting safety documentation.
Build and present safety cases and technical evidence to government customers, prime contractors, program leadership, and formal safety review authorities.
Support WSESRB, SSSTRP, and other applicable DoD safety reviews.
What We're Looking For
Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related STEM discipline.
10+ years of systems/software engineering experience.
3+ years of direct system or software safety engineering experience in aerospace, defense, weapons systems, or another safety-critical environment.
Demonstrated practical experience applying MIL-STD-882E.
Hands-on experience with system/software hazard analysis and risk mitigation.
Experience evaluating embedded software architectures and C/C++ from a safety perspective.
Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
Highly Desired
DoD weapons system safety experience.
Experience executing MIL-STD-882E Tasks 204, 205, and 207.
Knowledge and practical application of the Joint Software Systems Safety Engineering Handbook (JSSSEH).
Experience with WSESRB and/or SSSTRP.
Experience supporting live-fire testing, fielding, or certification of defense systems.
Experience developing SSPPs, Software Safety Plans, and SARs.
No active security clearance is required for this position.
