Job Description

Duties

  • Plans and administers the base sports program to include intramural, extramural, varsity sports fitness and recreation programs.
  • Exercises limited supervisory personnel management responsibilities over appropriated subordinate employees as an assistant to the supervisory Sports Specialist.
  • Determines adequacy of sports facilities and fitness equipment.
  • Arranges for supplies and services needed to accomplish scheduled sports, fitness and recreation activities.
  • Prepares publicity items, evaluates effectiveness of programs and varies programs in light of findings.
  • Develops sports and fitness training program for newly assigned.

  • Individuals will work around chemicals, (such as Gas, detergents, oil and paint).
  • CPR/AED and First Aid is a requirement.
  • Individual must be able to lift up to 100 lbs with staff assistance.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • Individual will also be required to work the front counter, issuing equipment and laundering towels for daily use. Will also sell retail from the retail store in the Fitness Center and issue Outdoor Recreation equipment.
  • Individual must maintain their advanced fitness certification, to meet Air Force Fitness Standards, and complete all mandatory training IAW AFI 34-266.
  • Incumbent is subject to work an uncommon tour of duty to meet program requirements including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, Recreation Aid and Assistant, 0189 Series.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of basic principles, concepts, and methodology of a sports management and fitness fundamentals, and skill in applying this knowledge in providing customer service, facility safety, proper use of weight equipment, intramural/extramural/varsity sports, recreational activities, and counter operations. EDUCATION: One (1) full year of graduate education with courses related to recreation or physical education such as Sports Management or Sports Science . My education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of this position . NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-06 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge of principles, concepts, procedures and techniques of sports management and fitness fundamentals.

2. Knowledge of standards of play and design for indoor and outdoor sports facilities.

3. Knowledge of safety and security regulations, practices and procedures.

4. Ability to plan, organize and manage the function of the program.

5. Skill in effectively organizing and utilizing all available resources within the program framework.

6. Knowledge of budgeting, inventory and supply principles.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
