We are seeking a dynamic, creative and analytical candidate to help us define, design, and assess the cyber resiliency of U.S. Navy ship systems, combat systems, and future architectures. We are looking to push the boundaries of ship and system capabilities by providing critical cyber resilient system design and analysis.

Your contributions will help us transform data into knowledge, enabling decision-makers to make informed choices on the future direction of a system-of-systems architecture, integration and cyber evaluations for various U. S. Navy submarines and associated systems. You will join a hardworking and expert team of cyber engineers and subject matter experts in an collaborative environment that values creative innovation.

As a Combat Systems Cyber Engineer you will...
  • Apply operational and analytical problem solving skills to identify cyber vulnerabilities, solutions, and mitigations for submarine systems and submarine combat systems, to inform future requirements and resiliency approaches.
  • Collaborate with system developers, government, and cyber team members, through internal and external working groups, to identify, define, and design cyber-resilient solutions and procedures for U.S. Navy submarines and their systems.
  • Have the opportunity to share your analysis and methodology across multiple peer working groups and organizations.
  • Coordinate with system developers, Navy labs, and other University-affiliated research centers to plan and execute cyber resiliency test, ensuring cyber test scope, analysis methodology, appropriate measures of performance, and data required to execute analysis are mission-relevant and comprehensive.
  • Participate in cyber test planning and execution as a subject matter expert at developer/government facilities in support of assessment of combat systems.
  • Contribute to cyber resiliency testing as a subject matter expert at developer/Fleet facilities in support of assessment of submarine-based combat systems.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
  • Possess a BS degree, ideally in Cyber Security, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, are Submarine Warfare qualified, and have extensive relevant experience with detailed operational employment of submarines and their systems, to incldue offensive or defensive cyber operations.
  • Are passionate about applying cyber experience, operational experience, and analytical skills in an innovative and collaborative environment.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and are skilled at developing relationships across organizational teams.
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Are proficient at multi-tasking, prioritizing assignments, communicating progress and meeting deadlines.
  • Are willing to travel occasionally to participate in system test, delivery, and integration tests at sponsor or customer sites.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Possess a MS degree in Cyber Security, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • Have 10+ years of experience leading a technical team in offensive or defensive cyber operations.
  • Have previous experience with development of U.S. Navy ships and systems.
  • Have an active Top Secret level clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
