Position Overview
IntelliSys is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) engineering and design efforts. This position will provide engineering expertise supporting the design, analysis, modification, and lifecycle support of shipboard electrical power generation, distribution, lighting, and communication systems.
The successful candidate will contribute to complex engineering studies, shipboard modernization efforts, and electrical system troubleshooting while ensuring compliance with Navy standards and mission requirements. Candidates with experience supporting marine electrical power systems, protective device coordination, and shipboard electrical design are highly desired.
The position is primarily remote; however, candidates must reside within the Hampton Roads region and be available to perform periodic shipboard inspections, engineering assessments, and sea trials at facilities including Little Creek, Norfolk, Newport News, and other regional waterfront locations.
Responsibilities
As an Electrical Engineer, you will:
Develop engineering solutions supporting shipboard electrical power generation, distribution, lighting, and communication systems.
Perform electrical engineering analyses including electrical load analyses, voltage drop calculations, fault current studies, and protective device coordination studies.
Prepare Electrical Plant Load Analyses (EPLA), Electric Plant Distribution Impact Data (EPDID), one-line diagrams, electrical schematics, and supporting engineering calculations.
Design and evaluate electrical modifications supporting ship modernization, maintenance availabilities, and repair activities.
Develop contract design packages and in-house engineering solutions in accordance with applicable Navy standards and customer requirements.
Support First Article Testing, system troubleshooting, equipment validation, and technical evaluations.
Conduct shipboard inspections, engineering surveys, ship checks, and sea trials before, during, and after vessel modifications.
Evaluate existing electrical systems and provide recommendations to improve reliability, maintainability, safety, and operational performance.
Collaborate with Government engineers, ship's force personnel, shipyards, and multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout project execution.
Prepare technical reports, engineering studies, design documentation, and presentations supporting customer decision-making.
Provide technical guidance to project teams and support engineering reviews throughout the design lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Five (5) or more years of professional electrical engineering experience.
Active Secret Security Clearance.
Experience performing electrical engineering calculations, technical analyses, and design documentation.
Familiarity with marine electrical systems, including power generation, power distribution, lighting systems, motors, pumps, navigation equipment, communications equipment, instrumentation, sensors, and shore power interfaces.
Experience interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting Military Sealift Command (MSC), NAVSEA, or other U.S. Navy surface ship programs is highly desired.
Experience supporting one or more of the following vessel classes is a plus:
Military Sealift Command vessels
Aircraft Carriers
Destroyers (DDG)
Cruisers (CG)
Littoral Combat Ships (LCS)
Amphibious Assault Ships (LHA/LHD)
Dock Landing Ships (LSD)
Experience with one or more of the following engineering tools is preferred:
SKM Power Tools
AutoCAD
MathCAD
ANSYS
FEMAP
Optimoor
Microsoft Office Suite
Adobe Acrobat Professional
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform periodic shipboard inspections aboard vessels in port or dry dock.
Ability to safely climb shipboard ladder wells and navigate confined engineering spaces.
Ability to walk extended distances and climb multiple flights of stairs.
Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
Ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members in person and through virtual collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams.
