Job Description

Duties

  • Responds to releases of hazardous materials anywhere they occur within the command.
  • Moves, unloads, and stores hazardous materials.
  • Collects excess hazardous materials and recyclable materials.
  • Examines incoming and outgoing shipments of hazardous materials.
  • Determine the Personal Protective Equipment needed to handle the hazardous material.

Conditions of employment
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual physical examinations.
  • Must be able to obtain (Within 6 Months of employment) and retain at own expense a "CLASS "B" Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
  • Position requires the incumbent be a CAIRA responder and, as such, incumbent must be physically able to meet the requirements of the Chemical Accident/Incident Response Assistance (CAIRA) Program.
  • Wearing of protective personal equipment during CAIRA exercises and serving as a chemical hotline team member involved in the movement of contaminated and injured personnel from the site of the accident.
  • Routinely operates gasoline and diesel powered government-owned or leased vehicles, stake or close body with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds of GCWR.
  • Employee vehicles are operated in all types of traffic and weather conditions over public street and highways. Operator must be cognizant of state and federal transportation requirements.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position is subject to Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment/Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Hazardous Materials Handler (MVO) without more than normal supervision. Which include the ability tosafely handle hazardous materials, assuring materials are moved in accordance with regulations and instructions, and verifying stock numbers on incoming and outgoing materials. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Efforts: Work is performed on hard surfaces and in work areas that require standing, stooping, bending, climbing ladders, and may handle weights in excess of 40 pounds. Hand trucks, pallet jacks, forklifts, side loaders, and other workers are available for assistance with heavier items. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises. Handles containerized hazardous materials daily including highly flammable and extremely toxic substances where there exists the possibility of leaks which could cause exposure to the substance.
  • Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside areas that are moderately lighted, drafty, and dusty. Warehouse is well ventilated but has neither has air conditioning nor heating. Work is performed both inside and outside, a substantial portion of which is performed outside in all kinds of weather. Worker is subject to burns while working with toxic material and must wear protective clothing of all levels such as rubberized suits, gloves, boots, aprons, and protective masks according to the work performed, due to the presence, both in the atmosphere and on objects handled of various types of hazardous materials. Work is subject to traffic hazards while operating forklifts or driving vehicles. When responding to toxic agent incidents, stringent precautions and safeguards must be taken to prevent severe injury or death due to a spill or release of toxic chemical agents.
