Medical Support Assistant

Duties

• Maintain a close working relationship with wards and clinics and their primary supervisors or medical officials to assist them in assuring appropriate quality of admissions.
• Assess eligibility of admitted service members, dependents, retirees, local and national political leaders, judges, and Veterans.
• Provide advisory services to management on admissions and transfer procedures.
• Assist in the pulling of medical records for monthly external reviews.
• Coordinate incoming transfers from other facilities, ensuring bed on applicable ward.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
• This position requires shift work to provide coverage between 1530 - 2330.
• This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
• This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination unless exempt by medical personnel.
• This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
• Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series, unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes scheduling patient appointments, preparing a variety of reports utilizing office automation tools such as Military Health System (MHS) Genesis, and documenting patient charts in a medical treatment facility or clinic setting. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
