Health Technician

Duties

• Answers clinic telephones, greets patients, answers patient's questions about appointment time, health benefits, waiting times, clinic services and other general questions not related to diagnosis or treatment.
• Prepares and activates the master appointment schedule for the clinic.
• Routes consultation forms to the appropriate provider or service.
• Administers topical medications.
• Operates specialized medical equipment associated with screening clinic patient.
• Prepares laboratory, radiology requests and other forms as ordered by providers.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
• This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.
• This position requires the completion of an Occupational Health pre-employment Physical Examination.
• Moderate to heavy lifting up to 45 pounds is required.
• This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
• This position requires Basic Life Support (BLS) training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
• This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
• This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
• This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
• This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education/experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes interviewing the patient and soliciting general health and ocular history; aid in the treatment of patients; utilize an automated systems to schedule or reschedule appointments, receive/greets incoming patients, answer telephone and refer calls as needed. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Nursing, Patient care, or Medical Laboratory Science.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
