We are seeking a Junior Java Developer to support a mission-focused enterprise modernization effort within the Department of Veterans Affairs. Working under the guidance of senior developers, integration architects, and DevSecOps engineers, the Junior Java Developer will develop, test, document, and support Java-based services, interface components, and migration utilities that enable secure data exchange among Salesforce Service Cloud, an Experience Cloud Applicant Portal, the VA Digital Integration Platform, SharePoint Online, and other approved enterprise services. The role supports delivery from backlog refinement and coding through integration testing, deployment, defect resolution, Hypercare, and operational transition. Success requires sound Java fundamentals, careful adherence to approved designs and coding standards, a willingness to learn, and effective collaboration across Salesforce, data, integration, quality assurance, security, and operations teams.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Review assigned user stories, acceptance criteria, interface specifications, and technical designs; clarify questions and estimate work with senior team members.

·         Develop and maintain Java services, application components, utilities, and supporting code in accordance with approved architecture, coding standards, and reusable design patterns.

·         Develop and consume RESTful APIs and service endpoints using structured data formats such as JSON and XML to support approved enterprise data exchanges.

·         Implement interface components supporting Salesforce, the Digital Integration Platform, enterprise middleware, SharePoint Online, email, notification, document, and other approved services.

·         Implement data mapping, transformation, validation, routing, error handling, logging, retry, and audit capabilities required for reliable and traceable integrations.

·         Assist with Java-based batch processes or utilities supporting legacy data extraction, transformation, mock conversions, reconciliation, and production migration validation.

·         Use SQL and approved data-access approaches to retrieve, update, and validate information while preserving data integrity and approved security controls.

·         Create unit tests and support automated integration tests, service mocks, and test data; address code-quality findings and maintain required test evidence.

·         Participate in peer reviews, apply feedback from senior developers and architects, and refactor assigned code to improve maintainability, reliability, and performance.

·         Maintain code in source control and support branching, pull requests, build and dependency management, CI/CD pipelines, deployment packages, and environment promotions.

·         Apply secure coding practices for authentication, authorization, input validation, secrets, service accounts, certificates, sensitive information, and least-privilege access.

·         Troubleshoot defects using application logs, API responses, test results, and data comparisons; assist with root-cause analysis and correction across development, test, and production environments.

·         Participate in two-week Agile sprints, Program Increment planning, backlog refinement, estimation, daily coordination, sprint reviews, demonstrations, and retrospectives.

·         Prepare code comments, API and configuration notes, test results, deployment inputs, and knowledge-transfer materials; support release readiness, production deployment, Hypercare, and operational transition.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

·         1+ year of hands-on Java software development experience gained through professional employment or equivalent internship, co-op, apprenticeship, or substantive project work.

·         Working knowledge of core Java, object-oriented programming, collections, exception handling, reusable design principles, and development of readable and maintainable code.

·         Experience developing, consuming, or testing RESTful APIs or backend services using HTTP and structured payloads such as JSON; familiarity with XML is beneficial.

·         Basic knowledge of relational databases and SQL, including data retrieval, joins, updates, validation, and investigation of data-related defects.

·         Experience writing unit tests and debugging code using logs, breakpoints, test results, and other standard development techniques.

·         Familiarity with Git or comparable source control, code reviews, branch-based development, and Java build or dependency-management tools.

·         Basic understanding of CI/CD, automated builds and tests, code-quality checks, and controlled promotion of software across development and test environments.

·         Understanding of secure coding fundamentals, including input validation, error handling, protection of credentials and sensitive data, and least-privilege principles.

·         Ability to work within an Agile delivery team, follow approved technical direction, manage assigned tasks, communicate status and blockers, and respond constructively to feedback.

·         Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills, with demonstrated initiative and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and business processes.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED:

·         Experience with Spring, Spring Boot, Jakarta EE, or another commonly used Java application framework.

·         Familiarity with Salesforce APIs, Salesforce Service Cloud, Experience Cloud, or integration with comparable CRM and case-management platforms.

·         Familiarity with MuleSoft, the VA Digital Integration Platform, API gateways, message routing, or other enterprise integration and middleware technologies.

·         Exposure to SharePoint Online, enterprise document repositories, document metadata, email or notification services, or API-based document exchange.

·         Experience with legacy data migration, ETL or batch processing, data mapping and transformation, mock conversions, or reconciliation activities.

·         Familiarity with authentication and service-integration patterns such as OAuth 2.0, tokens, certificates, service accounts, or secure API credentials.

·         Experience using Azure DevOps, Jira, Jenkins, or comparable tools for backlog management, source control, automated builds, testing, and deployment tracking.

·         Experience supporting Federal, state, healthcare, legal, licensing, credentialing, accreditation, or other regulated environments; Department of Veterans Affairs experience is a plus.

·         Relevant Java, cloud, Agile, or software-development certification is preferred but not required.

EDUCATION:

·        Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant experience.

CLEARANCE:

·         Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

WORK LOCATION:
