About the Role
We are seeking an experienced VMware Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support a mission-critical cloud and virtualization environment. This role is ideal for a senior virtualization engineer who thrives in complex enterprise infrastructures and enjoys designing, automating, and optimizing highly available VMware-based platforms.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across virtualization, cloud operations, automation, security compliance, and infrastructure modernization initiatives. You will work closely with engineering teams to ensure reliability, scalability, and security of enterprise workloads supporting critical business and operational objectives.
What You'll Do
• Administer, engineer, and maintain VMware environments including:
○ vSphere
○ ESXi
○ vCenter
○ vSAN
○ NSX
○ VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF)
• Design and support hybrid-cloud and multi-cloud infrastructure solutions.
• Lead virtualization architecture planning, implementation, and optimization efforts.
• Manage workload migrations, capacity planning, and performance tuning.
• Implement and support:
○ High Availability (HA)
○ Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS)
○ Disaster Recovery (DR)
○ Backup and recovery solutions
• Automate infrastructure management using:
○ VMware Aria / vRealize
○ PowerCLI
○ Terraform
○ Ansible
○ API integrations and orchestration tools
• Troubleshoot complex virtualization, networking, storage, and cloud platform issues.
• Support security and compliance initiatives, including RMF, ATO, and STIG requirements.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, cybersecurity, and leadership teams.
• Develop technical documentation, runbooks, and training materials.
• Lead technical discussions, gather requirements, and communicate solutions to stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
• Deep expertise with VMware technologies including vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, NSX, and VMware Cloud Foundation.
• Strong experience supporting enterprise virtualization and cloud infrastructure environments.
• Experience architecting and supporting hybrid-cloud and multi-cloud solutions.
• Advanced knowledge of virtualization concepts, workload migration, HA, DRS, capacity planning, and disaster recovery.
• Hands-on experience with VMware Aria/vRealize, PowerCLI, Terraform, Ansible, and API-driven automation.
• Strong understanding of cloud networking, micro-segmentation, storage integration, and enterprise backup/recovery platforms.
• Experience operating in DoD or Federal environments.
• Familiarity with:
○ RMF (Risk Management Framework)
○ ATO (Authority to Operate)
○ STIG (Security Technical Implementation Guides)
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to present technical concepts to diverse audiences.
• Active Secret Clearance.
• U.S. Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications
• Linux administration experience.
• Broad systems engineering background.
• Experience supporting enterprise cloud platforms.
• Additional experience with disaster recovery planning and execution.
• Exposure to highly regulated or mission-focused environments.
