Senior AWS Cloud Engineer
Location: Norfolk, Virginia
Work Arrangement: Onsite preferred; hybrid or remote may be considered for exceptional candidates able to support daily customer coordination and periodic onsite work
Level: Senior technical contributor / Cloud migration engineer

Position Summary:

Seeking a Senior AWS Cloud Engineer to support the migration and modernization of legacy and hybrid-cloud workloads into secure, reliable, and maintainable AWS-hosted environments, including AWS GovCloud (US), for a U.S. Navy customer.
This is a hands-on engineering role for an experienced cloud professional who can assess current-state applications and infrastructure, develop practical migration approaches, build and configure AWS environments, execute migration waves, and support cutover and post-migration operations.
The role will contribute to the transition of legacy Unix-based and hybrid-cloud workloads while minimizing disruption to active applications and customer delivery schedules.
The successful candidate will work closely with enterprise architects, cybersecurity personnel, application teams, database administrators, program and project managers, and customer stakeholders supporting Navy maintenance, logistics, readiness, and related business-system environments.

Expected Responsibilities:

Assess existing applications, servers, interfaces, databases, dependencies, performance characteristics, and operational constraints to determine cloud-migration readiness.
Develop migration strategies and wave plans using appropriate rehost, replatform, refactor, retire, retain, or replace approaches.
Design, build, configure, and maintain AWS environments, including networking, identity and access management, compute, storage, databases, monitoring, logging, and backup capabilities. Maintain stable and efficient infrastructure across development, QA/test, and production environments throughout the development lifecycle.
Support migration from legacy Unix-based, on-premises, and hybrid-cloud environments into secure AWS-hosted architectures.
Execute proofs of concept, pilot migrations, test migrations, production cutovers, rollback planning, and post-migration validation with minimal service disruption.
Develop infrastructure-as-code templates and automation using tools such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, AWS CDK, or comparable technologies.
Implement and continuously improve building, packaging, configuration-management, deployment, CI/CD, patching, monitoring, alerting, and operational-support processes.
Apply AWS Well-Architected principles to improve operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization, and sustainability.
Coordinate with cybersecurity and platform teams to implement access controls, encryption, audit logging, vulnerability-management, boundary-protection, and federal data-handling requirements.
Analyze cloud usage and architecture to identify cost, licensing, performance, availability, and maintainability improvements.
Create and maintain cloud architecture diagrams, migration plans, runbooks, interface documentation, configuration records, risk logs, and operational procedures.
Troubleshoot complex migration, networking, identity, performance, application, and infrastructure issues across development, test, and production environments.
Provide technical guidance, code and design reviews, knowledge transfer, and mentoring to cloud engineers, system administrators, developers, and support personnel.
Collaborate across contractor and customer teams in a badgeless, mission-focused delivery environment.

Required Qualifications:

Seven or more years of experience in cloud engineering, systems engineering, infrastructure engineering, DevOps, platform engineering, application migration, or a related technical field.
Four or more years of hands-on experience designing, deploying, operating, or migrating production cloud workloads, including substantial experience with AWS.
Demonstrated experience planning and executing application or infrastructure migrations, including discovery, dependency mapping, testing, cutover, validation, and rollback planning.
Strong working knowledge of core AWS services and architecture concepts, including Amazon EC2, Amazon VPC, IAM, load balancing, storage, databases, monitoring, logging, and backup or disaster-recovery capabilities.
Experience with Linux, Unix, or Windows administration, shell scripting, system troubleshooting, and migration of legacy workloads.
Experience implementing infrastructure as code using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, AWS CDK, or comparable tools.
Experience with scripting or programming using Python, PowerShell, Bash, or a comparable language.
Experience with source control, automated deployment, CI/CD, configuration management, and cloud-operations practices using tools such as Jenkins, Maven, Puppet, Ansible, or comparable platforms.
Ability to analyze technical and operational constraints, develop practical migration recommendations, and communicate tradeoffs to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Strong documentation, problem-solving, teamwork, and customer-facing communication skills.
Active Secret clearance is highly preferred; candidates must possess or be able to obtain and maintain the clearance required for the position.

Education:

A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, cybersecurity, cloud computing, or a related technical field is preferred.
Relevant professional experience, technical training, and certifications may be considered in place of a degree, subject to applicable contract requirements.
