About this position:

The Lead Systems Engineer will provide technical leadership supporting the Decennial Transformation and Application Modernization (DTAM) initiative for the U.S. Census Bureau. This role is responsible for leading enterprise systems engineering, platform engineering, infrastructure implementation, and operational execution efforts supporting large-scale federal modernization initiatives.

The Lead Systems Engineer will oversee the design, implementation, integration, and sustainment of enterprise technology platforms supporting secure, scalable, and highly available mission-critical systems. This role will lead infrastructure engineering activities across cloud, containerization, automation, release engineering, and production operations while collaborating with architecture, application, data, and cybersecurity leadership.

Salary Range: $125K - $165K - commensurate with the candidate's skills, experience, location, and qualifications.

On a day-to-day basis, you will:


  1. Provide technical leadership for enterprise systems engineering, platform engineering, and infrastructure modernization initiatives.

  2. Lead implementation and operational support of enterprise infrastructure across cloud and hybrid environments.

  3. Design, deploy, configure, and maintain scalable platform solutions supporting mission-critical federal applications.

  4. Support cloud platform implementation across AWS GovCloud, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Government, Microsoft Azure Government, and Google Cloud Platform environments.

  5. Implement and manage containerized environments using technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS), and Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS).

  6. Lead infrastructure automation efforts using Infrastructure-as-Code and automation tools such as Terraform, Helm, Ansible, and related technologies.

  7. Support CI/CD-driven deployments, release engineering, and automated delivery processes in partnership with application development and DevSecOps teams.

  8. Develop and maintain operational workflows, deployment procedures, runbooks, and system administration standards.

  9. Lead production operations activities including monitoring, incident response, troubleshooting, performance optimization, and operational readiness.

  10. Support high availability, disaster recovery, scalability, and resiliency initiatives for enterprise platforms.

  11. Conduct technical assessments, engineering reviews, and implementation planning to support modernization efforts.

  12. Collaborate with the Lead Systems Architect to implement enterprise cloud architecture standards and platform strategies.

  13. Partner with the Lead Security Engineer to ensure infrastructure aligns with federal cybersecurity requirements, vulnerability management practices, and security controls.

  14. Support architecture reviews by providing technical feasibility assessments, implementation recommendations, and operational considerations.

  15. Manage technical teams, coordinate engineering activities, and ensure successful delivery of assigned systems engineering efforts.

  16. Provide technical guidance to stakeholders and senior leadership regarding platform performance, operational readiness, and engineering execution.


Required Education/Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field (advanced degree preferred)

  • 15+ years of experience in systems engineering, architecture, application development, or enterprise modernization programs

  • Proven experience leading enterprise infrastructure or platform engineering initiatives in large-scale environments.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting federal government IT programs and mission-critical systems.

  • Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise infrastructure solutions across complex environments.

  • Experience supporting cloud-based infrastructure and platform operations.

  • Experience leading technical teams responsible for infrastructure implementation, operations, and sustainment.

  • Strong understanding of enterprise systems engineering principles, including requirements analysis, design, integration, testing, deployment, and operations.

  • Experience supporting production environments with high availability, performance, reliability, and operational requirements.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate with technical teams, government stakeholders, and senior leadership.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Certifications:

    • Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP)

    • The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF)

    • Cloud Architecture certification (AWS/Azure/Google)

    • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)



  • Experience supporting U.S. Census Bureau programs or other large-scale federal civilian modernization initiatives.

  • Experience with container orchestration platforms including Kubernetes, Amazon EKS, Amazon ECS, or similar technologies.

  • Experience implementing Infrastructure-as-Code solutions using Terraform, Helm, Ansible, or similar tools.

  • Experience supporting DevSecOps environments and CI/CD automation.

  • Experience with GitLab CI/CD, GitLab Runner, YAML pipelines, and automated deployment workflows.

  • Experience supporting platform monitoring, observability, and operational management tools such as:

    • Splunk

    • AppDynamics

    • SolarWinds

    • CloudWatch

    • ELK Stack



  • Experience supporting cybersecurity and compliance requirements within federal environments, including:

    • NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF)

    • FedRAMP environments

    • Security authorization activities



  • Experience supporting Agile, SAFe, iterative, and incremental delivery methodologies.
