Overview
TEKsystems is seeking a Field Engineer to support a large-scale Air Force Network Modernization Program at Hickam AFB and Eielson AFB. This role will serve as a technical lead responsible for supporting the design, installation, testing, troubleshooting, and implementation of critical network infrastructure upgrades across the base.
The ideal candidate combines hands-on expertise in fiber optics, structured cabling, telecommunications infrastructure, and network deployment with the ability to lead small teams, coordinate with government stakeholders, and drive projects to successful completion.
This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in a high-visibility modernization initiative that directly impacts mission readiness and communications capabilities across the installation.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Evaluate existing infrastructure and recommend upgrades, improvements, and modernization strategies.
- Troubleshoot complex technical challenges and develop solutions to maintain project schedules and deliverables.
- Review technical deliverables to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with project requirements.
- Fiber Optic & Network Infrastructure
- Perform and oversee fiber optic installation, testing, certification, and troubleshooting activities.
- Conduct end-to-end fiber testing using:
- OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer)
- Optical power meters
- Network certification and diagnostic tools
- Support installation and validation of structured cabling systems, including both fiber and copper infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot connectivity, performance, and physical layer issues affecting network operations.
- Network Modernization Activities
- Support communication closet surveys, design efforts, and installation activities.
- Assist with network equipment design, staging, deployment, and implementation.
- Validate infrastructure readiness and ensure systems meet technical and operational requirements.
- Provide technical recommendations regarding ISP/OSP distribution system designs and engineering solutions.
- Coordinate with Government Points of Contact (POCs) to ensure timely access, clearances, escorts, equipment delivery, and installation schedules.
- Support project managers by maintaining clear and timely communication with all stakeholders.
- Document findings, provide status updates, and communicate risks or obstacles impacting project execution.
Required Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience supporting telecommunications, network infrastructure, or field engineering projects.
- Active Secret Clearance
- Experience with:
Fiber optic installation, testing, and troubleshooting
Structured cabling systems
Network infrastructure deployment
Infrastructure assessments and technical documentation
Experience using OTDRs, power meters, and related fiber testing equipment.
Ability to read, interpret, and update engineering drawings and network diagrams.
Strong verbal communication and client-facing skills.
Experience coordinating field activities and installation schedules.
