As the Fire Safety Officer, you will serve as the principal advisor to the Naval Supervisorial Authority (NSA) for shipboard fire protection, damage control, and industrial fire safety aboard U.S. Navy LHA and LPD-17 class ships.

As Chairman of the Fire Safety Council, the FSO provides fire safety oversight during industrial maintenance availabilities, including daily safety and housekeeping inspections to ensure compliance with Navy Standard Item 009-08 and NSTM 8010 Industrial Ship Safety Manual for Fire Prevention and Response.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as Chairman of the Fire Safety Council.
  • Publish weekly Safety Plan of the Week.
  • Publish weekly Fire Safety Council minutes.
  • Draft low risk deviation requests in accordance with the 8010 manual and forward to the ship Commanding Officer for approval.
  • Work with FSC membership to develop mitigation plans that maintain a strong fire safety posture during high workload industrial availability.
  • Schedule, chair, and document Fire Safety Council meetings.
  • Review fire safety discrepancies, risk assessments and monitor shipyard COA plan.
  • Brief the NSA Representative, Chief Engineer and Damage Control Assistant on fire safety posture and trends.
  • Play an active role in the daily safety and housekeeping walkthrough.
  • Inspect compartments for fire hazards, improper material storage, housekeeping deficiencies, and access/egress issues.
  • Verify compliance with contractor hot work controls, fire watches, and integrity of fire zone boundaries throughout the ship.
  • Identify unsafe conditions related to combustibles, flammable liquids, ventilation, and electrical hazards.
  • Coordinate immediate corrective actions with shipyard management representatives and ship's force.
  • Track discrepancies to closure and brief results as necessary at daily production and fire safety.
  • Be thoroughly familiar with the contents of 8010 manual and Navy Standard Item 009-08.
  • Act as the NSA fire safety subject matter expert.
  • Interact daily with shipyard designated Hot Work Coordinator and Damage Control Assistant.
  • Monitor and validate contractor corrective action plans.
  • Act as NSA point of contact during 8010 Validation Exercise and the 8010 Fire Drill.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Interim DoD Secret clearance post-employment.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's Degree.
    • An Associate's Degree and 2 years of additional experience will be considered in lieu of Bachelor's Degree or a High School Diploma/GED and 4 years of additional experience will be considered in lieu of Bachelor's Degree.
    • Individuals with technical school or military certifications will also be considered.
  • 8 years of related/similar experience.
  • Ability to operate personal computers and have good knowledge and operational abilities with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Knowledgeable of both NSTM 8010 and Navy Standard Item 009-08.
  • Ability to support activities in a shipyard or naval facility. This is a physically demanding role; some work will occur within an industrial field office, outdoors and/or aboard ship while the ship is undergoing construction, alteration, activation, overhaul, repair, and/or underway trials. Walking through potentially uneven terrain ashore and onboard and climbing ladders throughout naval vessels to accomplish ship checks will be required. Exposure to high noise levels, uncomfortable temperatures, heights, or other industrial safety conditions will require use of personal protective clothing and equipment.
  • Ability to travel (50%) to support activities in a shipyard or naval facility or on-board ship while underway.
