Job Description

Why choose between doing meaningful work and having a fulfilling life? At MITRE, you can have both. That's because MITRE people are committed to tackling our nation's toughest challenges-and we're committed to the long-term well-being of our employees. MITRE is different from most technology companies. We are a not-for-profit corporation chartered to work for the public interest, with no commercial conflicts to influence what we do. The R&D centers we operate for the government create lasting impact in fields as diverse as cybersecurity, healthcare, aviation, defense, and enterprise transformation. We're making a difference every day-working for a safer, healthier, and more secure nation and world. Our workplace reflects our values. We offer competitive benefits, exceptional professional development opportunities for career growth, and a culture of innovation that embraces adaptability, collaboration, technical excellence, and people in partnership. If this sounds like the choice you want to make, then choose MITRE - and make a difference with us.

The MITRE Corporation's All-Domain Integration (ADI) Department (N174) partners with the Department of the Air Force (DAF) to accelerate the delivery of integrated command and control capabilities that enable the Air Force, Space Force, Joint Force, and Coalition partners to operate at the speed of relevance. Through expertise in mission engineering, systems integration, systems engineering, architecture, modeling and simulation, and operational analysis, MITRE provides independent technical leadership supporting the evolution of the Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS), the Department of the Air Force Battle Network (DBN), and Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2).

The ADI Department is seeking a Principal Engineer to serve as the ABMS Integration Lead supporting the Department of the Air Force Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communications and Battle Management (DAF PEO C3BM).

The ABMS Integration Lead provides technical leadership for planning, coordinating, and executing ABMS Integration Events that validate the integration of capabilities across the ABMS portfolio and demonstrate mission-level operational outcomes. Working across multiple ABMS branches, the ABMS Chief Engineer, the 96th Test Squadron, acquisition programs, operational stakeholders, and MITRE technical teams, the ABMS Integration Lead ensures that continual cross branch integration by design occurs across ABMS culminating in integration events as the proving ground for delivering mission-integrated warfighting capability.

ABMS Integration Events (AIEs) are central to transforming ABMS from a collection of independent programs into a cohesive operational capability. Guided by operational mission threads, AIEs validate system-of-systems (SoS) engineering, enterprise architecture, interoperability, resiliency, and data integration while providing measurable evidence of mission effectiveness. These events establish a common integration target across product lines, reduce technical and programmatic risk, and accelerate the transition of capabilities from development and experimentation into operational use.

Success in this role requires exceptional technical leadership, systems integration expertise, organizational coordination, and the ability to influence stakeholders across organizational boundaries while maintaining focus on mission outcomes.

  • Lead the MITRE team in planning, coordination, execution, and assessment of ABMS Integration Events (AIEs) supporting Department of the Air Force Battle Network modernization.
  • Collaborate closely with ABMS Branch leadership, the ABMS Chief Engineer, the 96th Test Squadron, operational stakeholders, acquisition organizations, and MITRE technical teams to develop integrated event objectives and execution plans.
  • Serve as the primary integration lead responsible for synchronizing capabilities across ABMS product lines and preparing for future cross-division integration.
  • Develop mission-thread driven integration events that validate end-to-end operational capability rather than individual system performance.
  • Lead planning for multi-enclave experimentation, risk reduction activities, integration demonstrations, and formal test events.
  • Define and coordinate micro-events and mini-events that progressively reduce technical and integration risk prior to major integration events.
  • Identify integration dependencies, shared infrastructure requirements, common services, and cross-product coordination activities independent of individual branch capability development.
  • Establish and maintain persistent integration environments that enable continuous system-of-systems integration and repeatable testing.
  • Coordinate configuration management, infrastructure readiness, resource availability, and event scheduling across participating organizations.
  • Promote automation to improve integration, deployment, validation, and event execution efficiency.
  • Validate that systems-of-systems engineering processes enable successful integration across product lines.
  • Assess enterprise architecture implementation through integrated mission execution and identify architectural gaps requiring sponsor attention.
  • Develop technical recommendations that improve interoperability, resiliency, architecture implementation, and mission effectiveness.
  • Communicate integration status, technical risks, mitigation strategies, and operational outcomes to senior government leadership and MITRE management.

The successful candidate will lead Integration Events that:
  • Transform ABMS from a collection of independent capabilities into a mission-integrated operational system.
  • Align stakeholders around measurable operational outcomes instead of isolated capability delivery.
  • Provide a common integration target for Program Management Offices, engineers, and acquisition organizations.
  • Demonstrate measurable operational value through mission-thread execution.
  • Accelerate the transition of capabilities from experimentation into operational deployment.
  • Drive technical integration across the ABMS capability stack.
  • Enable informed technical and acquisition decision-making at the divisional and enterprise levels.
  • Retire integration risks between product lines before operational fielding.
  • Validate Department of the Air Force enterprise architecture through operational execution.
  • Demonstrate that systems-of-systems engineering processes effectively support integrated capability delivery.

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership integrating complex systems-of-systems within Department of Defense environments.
  • Experience planning and executing large-scale integration, experimentation, demonstration, or operational test events.
  • Strong knowledge of systems engineering, systems integration, interoperability, and enterprise architectures.
  • Experience coordinating across multiple government organizations, acquisition programs, engineering teams, and operational stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting command and control, distributed systems, data integration, or enterprise networking initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate operational mission needs into integrated technical objectives.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills with demonstrated success leading without direct authority.
  • Ability to identify technical risks, integration dependencies, and mitigation strategies across large engineering portfolios.
  • Active Top Secret/SCI clearance.
  • Per the U.S. Government's eligibility requirements for a clearance, U.S Citizenship is required.
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

  • Experience supporting Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS), Department of the Air Force Battle Network (DBN), Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2), or Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2).
  • Experience working with the 96th Test Squadron, developmental test organizations, or operational test communities.
  • Knowledge of Dynamic Targeting, Integrated Air and Missile Defense, or other Joint operational mission threads.
  • Experience establishing persistent integration environments and continuous integration/continuous test capabilities.
  • Familiarity with digital engineering, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), DevSecOps, and automated test pipelines.
  • Experience supporting enterprise architecture validation and systems-of-systems engineering.
  • 15 years of experience in the field.
  • Experience with the Information Technology Stack (e.g. - cloud, network, data platform).
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity and information assurance risk assessment processes.
