Safety and Occupational Health Specialist

• Apply laws and regulations, policies and/or procedures related to safety and occupational health.
• Evaluate the safety of the handling, storage, and/or disposal of explosives and hazardous materials.
• Conduct analysis, write programs, assess lockout/tag out procedures and extend accepted safety principles in order to develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive safety and occupational health program.
• Perform inspections and surveys of facilities, equipment, and operations for which the installation has responsibility, to ensure compliance with safety and occupational health regulations and requirements.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Must obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
• Pre-employment and random drug testing is required.
• Employee must obtain CP-12 certification within 24 months of employment.
• Physical requirements: employee must be able to stand/walk in excess of 75% of the time, potentially in all weather conditions.
• Employee must be able to properly wear PPE as needed to support industrial operations. Examples include respirators, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety shoes, gloves, etc.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management; 2) Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements; 3) Developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards; 4) Conducting inspections or risk assessments involving Hazardous materials and equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11)

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
