PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN

• You will inspect and sample a variety of tanks, tank trucks, single product tankers, pipelines, barges and other media associated with the storage and transportation of petroleum products.
• You will analyze test results and perform routine calculations while ensuring that fuel impurity levels are within safety limitations.
• You will maintain records of fuel tests, independently interpret test results, and notify affected ship and/or activity and supervisors of any questionable findings.
• You will calibrate and perform limited maintenance/repair on laboratory test equipment, provide quality control and inspection services for all products received, stored, issued, or transferred at the Area of Responsibility (AOR).

• This position may require travel to places within and outside the contiguous United States which could include remote or isolated sites. You may be required to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• If eligible for permanent change of station, the appointee will be required to sign a transportation agreement to establish a Government time in service requirement of 12 months.

• You will be required to lift items up to 40 pounds in weight.
• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• Incumbent may be coded as "key" and as such may be required be removed from their military recall status. A signed statement of understanding required.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: 1) Conducting and analyzing a wide variety of chemical and physical tests while applying physical science principles and methodologies; 2) Providing quality control and inspection services; and 3) Assisting with corrective maintenance of laboratory equipment to support warfighting readiness of operating units.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. This position requires rotating shift work.

Work may require walking, bending and climbing during visits to various Navy and commercial installations. During the course of this travel, industrial facilities may be visited or toured.

Work may be performed outside (inspections and sampling) and may be subject to extreme heat and cold and hard, damp floors or surfaces. There may be exposure to dirty, dusty and greasy tanks and hoses; there may also be exposure to noxious fumes and toxic vapors while making appropriate inspections or visiting facilities undergoing repair, maintenance, or renovation.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.
