Electrical & FPGA Design Engineer

LOCATION: Kennedy Space Center, FL

JOB STATUS: Full-time

Astrion is seeking a highly experienced Engineer V / Engineer VI - Electrical & FPGA Design Engineer to support the design, development, integration, and testing of advanced electronics for NASA spaceflight programs. The selected candidate will lead the development of mixed analog/digital circuit card assemblies and FPGA-based hardware supporting spacecraft instrumentation, avionics, and scientific payloads from concept through flight qualification.

This position requires an experienced engineer capable of leading hardware development efforts, supporting formal design reviews, mentoring junior engineers, and serving as a technical authority throughout the hardware development lifecycle.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

Engineer V
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
  • Typically 10+ years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience designing mixed analog/digital circuit boards.
  • Experience with schematic capture tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence OrCAD, or equivalent.
  • Experience with circuit simulation tools such as LTSpice or equivalent.
  • Experience performing worst-case analysis, component derating, and part stress analysis.
  • Experience developing hardware through the complete product lifecycle from requirements through qualification.
  • Experience developing engineering documentation and formal test procedures.
  • Ability to support environmental testing including vibration and thermal-vacuum testing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Engineer VI

In addition to the Engineer V qualifications:
  • Typically 12+ years of progressively responsible engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership on complex aerospace or spaceflight hardware programs.
  • Experience serving as technical lead or lead design engineer on multiple hardware developments.
  • Experience leading formal design reviews and mentoring engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently solve complex technical problems and provide strategic engineering guidance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • FPGA development using VHDL.
  • Experience with Libero, ModelSim, Active-HDL, or Xilinx Vivado.
  • Experience with Microchip/Microsemi, AMD/Xilinx, or radiation-hardened FPGA devices.
  • Experience with spacecraft avionics or scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience with interfaces including:
    • RS-422
    • RS-485
    • I²C
    • SPI
    • UART
    • SpaceWire
    • PCIe
    • JTAG
  • Experience integrating sensors such as thermistors, pressure transducers, flow meters, sun sensors, or similar instrumentation.
  • Experience supporting NASA, DoD, or other government aerospace programs.
  • Active Secret security clearance.

Desired Skills

Experience supporting flight hardware development within a highly regulated environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the design and development of mixed analog/digital electronic hardware for spaceflight applications.
  • Develop system and board-level architectures, schematics, and component selections using industry-standard ECAD tools.
  • Perform circuit simulations, worst-case analysis, component derating, part stress analysis, and thermal assessments.
  • Develop FPGA designs using VHDL for radiation-tolerant and commercial FPGA architectures.
  • Verify FPGA functionality through simulation, timing analysis, and hardware validation.
  • Support PCB layout development by defining stackups, routing requirements, signal integrity constraints, and component placement guidelines.
  • Develop verification plans, test procedures, and automated test software to support functional, environmental, and acceptance testing.
  • Support integration, troubleshooting, vibration testing, thermal-vacuum testing, and system-level verification activities.
  • Lead technical reviews including SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, and peer design reviews.
  • Interface directly with NASA customers, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across multiple projects.
  • Prepare technical documentation, engineering reports, design packages, and verification documentation.
