Job Description



  • You will current permanent employees of DON, DoD Military Spouse Preference (MSP) eligibles, DoD Military Reserve (MR) and National Guard (NG) Technician Preference eligibles and DoD Retained Grade Preference eligibles, and VEOA eligibles.
  • You will inspect all systems, including electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic subassemblies, components, and related devices, for operational deficiencies or impairments.
  • You will make repairs by replacing pipe, valves, fittings, sprinkler heads, monitoring devices, etc. on faulty or damaged equipment, sprinkler systems, to ensure full operational condition.
  • You will perform various tests (pressure, discharge flow, etc.) for system operability, identifies problems that arise during or as a result of testing procedures, and takes steps to prevent or resolve them.

  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current CPR certification.


This position has an SPF for Grade 10 that the incumbent must demonstrate one of the following qualifying requirements has been met and is currently maintained. Qualified personnel must meet the standards set in UFC 3-601-02 Section 1-10.2.1. Acceptable requirements are as follows:

- A recognized certification through National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) with a minimum of Level II in Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems, or Special Hazard Suppression Systems.

- Completion of the Fire Suppression Systems Maintenance course (J3AZR3E451 01FB) at the Technical Training Center, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. The 82nd Training Wing, 782nd Training Group, 366th Training Squadron provides engineer craftsman skills training for all DoD branches and has both Army and Navy detachments assigned to the squadron.

- A recognized journeyman or craftsman-level qualifications for water-based suppression systems, or special hazard suppression systems, such as a formalized labor organization-based journeyman training, completed apprenticeship, or similar programs.

- A qualification or license from any state in water-based suppression systems, or special hazard suppression systems (or local jurisdiction if delegated authority by the state) and supporting continuing education if required by the local jurisdiction.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Replacing pipe, valves, fittings, sprinkler heads, monitoring devices, etc. on faulty or damaged sprinkler systems, to ensure full operational condition; 2) Documenting installs electronically, maintenance, testing, repairs, inspections, and impairments as required; 3) Meeting preventative maintenance tasks; 4) Coordinating with fire alarm or special hazard mechanics to verify proper monitoring, sequencing and controls; and 5) Ensuring the proper installation, as well as performing the maintenance, repair, inspection, and testing, of complex and integrated facility-level water based fire suppression systems.
