Environmental and Occupational Health Specialist I (ESOH)

Exempt; Regular Full-Time

: Bldg. 954, Eglin AFB, FL - On Site

: The Environmental and Occupational Health Specialist I uses collection methods, applies standards, and verifies controls in performing Industrial Hygiene (IH) surveys with general supervision and instruction. Performs routine environmental assessments and assists with spill response and collecting/transporting hazardous waste. Works with Environmental, Safety, and Occupational Health (ESOH) teammates to address hazardous material management and hazardous waste collection site questions. Analyzes workplaces relative to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, ventilation, noise, air/lighting quality, etc. at work centers. Leads, facilitates, coordinates and instructs CPR, AED, and First Aid certification training sessions for employees. Supports radiation safety efforts in monitoring, evaluating, and managing compliance with ionizing and non-ionizing radiation standards.


  • Works with test site supervisors and government counterparts to ensure environmental and occupational compliance with local instructions, Air Force publications, and laws.
  • May be required to work in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to enter/oversee contaminated areas to assess situations, collect samples, or assist in cleanup.
  • Maintains records and creates/files reports as required.
  • Works as a team member and applies professional judgment and ethics to accomplish tasks/projects without jeopardizing health/safety.
  • Accomplishes required training and maintains required certifications as needed.
  • Accomplishes training to support contract/mission requirements in job related areas such as radiation, respirator training, audiograms, or First Aid/AED training.
  • Conducts research to stay current on laws, policy, best practices, and issues in the Environmental, Health and Safety fields.
  • Monitors/examines work processes and facilities to determine related hazards or to measure conditions.
  • Assists with identifying discrepancies and recommends improvements in periodic site Environmental and Occupational Health assessments.
  • Uses a computer/MS Office to create data such as reports, databases, charts/graphs, briefings, and email.
  • Functions with an emphasis on problem-solving, interpersonal skills, team building, time management and good communication skills.


Job Requirements

Supports E-OMS contract operational objectives. Observes company Quality, Safety, Environmental, Security and Administrative policies; supports process improvements. Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.

A two-year degree from an accredited school in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, or closely related course of study is required. A minimum of two years' experience in the Environmental/Occupational Health field is highly desirable. Certifications related to Industrial Hygiene or Environmental Sciences are highly desirable. Basic knowledge of ESOH issues is required. Basic knowledge in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidance, protection against radiation, hazardous noise, occupational exposure, and other workplace hazards is required. Basic experience in Industrial Hygiene techniques for hazard assessment, contamination measurement, sample collection and testing, and interpretation of lab results is desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft programs and maintaining records and creating reports is required.

Candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Supports E-OMS operational objectives; observes company Quality, Safety, Environmental, Security and Administrative policies. Supports Process Improvement.

May perform work assignments in a temperature and humidity-controlled environment. Some tasks and assignments will require work performance in outside environments in heat or cold with exposure to the conditions and wildlife typical to Florida or in industrial work locations.

Must be able to drive government vehicles on paved or dirt roads, work in respirator or protective suit, lift/carry up to 50 pounds, climb stairs/ladders and walk various terrains. Requires full mobility to stoop, bend, reach, stretch, and operate equipment requiring good dexterity.
