SUMMARY:
The TTC Village Airfield Operations Tech is responsible for maintaining the safe operation of a rural airfield that serves as a critical transportation link for passengers, mail, freight, medical evacuations (medevac), emergency services, and community supplies. This position oversees daily runway maintenance, brush clearing, snow and ice control, wildlife management, regulatory compliance, and assists with emergency response coordination as needed.
The Airfield Operations Tech plays a vital role in ensuring year-round air access to the community while working closely with State and FAA personnel, air carriers, medevac providers, village IRA, contractors, and local government agencies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Airfield Operations:
• Conduct daily inspections of runways, taxiways, aprons, lighting systems, windsocks, and navigational equipment.
• Monitor airfield surface conditions and communicate hazards to airport users and regulatory agencies.
• Support safe operations for passenger, cargo, mail, and medevac flights.
• Maintain operational readiness during severe weather, flooding, icing, and other environmental conditions.
Runway and Facilities Maintenance:
• Oversee runway grading, surface maintenance, and drainage improvements.
• Coordinate snow plowing, snow berm removal, sanding, and ice mitigation efforts.
• Inspect and maintain runway lighting systems and airport buildings.
• Manage fuel storage areas, maintenance equipment building, and operational vehicles.
Winter Operations:
• Implement winter maintenance plans.
• Monitor weather conditions and respond to snow and ice accumulation.
• Operate all snow removal equipment.
• Maintain runway visibility and safe operating surfaces during winter months.
• Coordinate with pilots and operators regarding runway conditions.
Emergency and Medevac Support:
• Assist with emergency response procedures during aircraft incidents or severe weather events.
• Assist emergency response agencies with airport access and operational support.
Regulatory Compliance:
• Ensure compliance with contract requirements, and state aviation requirements.
Administrative and Financial Responsibilities:
• Assist with TTC annual airfield maintenance budgets and planning.
• Track expenditures and maintenance costs.
• Manage equipment inventories and replacement schedules.
• Prepare reports, as necessary.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND LICENSURE:
Education:
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Heavy Equipment Operator Certification preferred.
Experience:
• Three years of airport operations, transportation, heavy equipment, public works, facilities maintenance, or related experience.
• Experience operating snow removal or heavy equipment preferred.
• Experience working in rural Alaska environments strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of rural airport operations and aviation safety practices.
• Understanding of FAA regulations and airport maintenance standards.
• Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment.
• Experience responding to emergency situations.
• Knowledge of Arctic weather impacts on transportation systems.
• Strong communication and community engagement skills.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Outdoor work in a remote Alaska village setting, year-round exposure to extreme cold, wind, snow, and rain, with physically demanding tasks (lifting up to 50 lbs, operating heavy equipment) and on-call availability for emergencies and severe weather events outside normal hours.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme cold, wind, snow, rain, and other adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to operate trucks, graders, loaders, snow blowers, and other maintenance equipment.
• Ability to respond to emergencies outside normal working hours.
• Availability for overtime work during weather events and emergency operations.
