JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, modify, and inspect heavy mobile equipment, various support equipment, and special purpose vehicles such as; fuel dispensing trucks, refueling equipment, crash/structural firefighting equipment and pump trucks, forklifts, materiel handling, aircraft cargo loaders, aircraft and equipment tow tractors, large runway snow removal vehicles, aircraft de-icing equipment, sweepers, bulldozers, mobile cranes, road graders, heavy construction and earth moving vehicles, backhoes, front end loaders, excavators, trenchers, and tactical/armored protected vehicles.

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the Connecticut Air National Guard.

The major duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Repairs, adjust, overhauls, performs major repairs, and maintenance on military and commercial designed heavy mobile equipment and special purpose vehicles.
  • Performs body repair and corrosion control, refinishes and repaints surfaces as required.
  • Prepares, maintains and submits applicable maintenance work orders for man-hour and data collection accounting, to include completing forms to reflect work performed or delayed and parts and maintenance required.
  • Participates as OJT Instructor in the vehicle maintenance area.
  • Assists in conducting the local occupational safety and health training program, to include compliance with directives and procedures for proper disposal of hazardous waste products within the functional area.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Mechanics at this level work both inside and outside. When working inside, they are frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which are difficult to talk above. When working outside, they may be required to work in bad weather. Workers are often exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. Workers are subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries for fall from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices. Some safety equipment and clothing may need to be worn for long periods of time.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Heavy mobile equipment mechanics work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. They work on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. They perform strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. They frequently lift and carry items, unassisted, weighing up to 40 pounds, and often exert similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. They frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. They are sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.





  • Incumbent is required to serve a 2-year trial/probationary period.
  • National Guard Membership is required.

  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • Must meet Compatible Military Assignment within one year from placement.
  • Wear of the military uniform is mandatory.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
  • Must possess a valid state drivers license.


GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the skill to make repairs or the ability to assist with repairs that can be accomplished by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Your resume and any other supporting documentation you wish to provide must clearly substantiate you currently possess 18 months of specialized experience in the following:
  • Experience or training leading to a thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment.
  • Experience demonstrating the ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment.
  • Experience demonstrating knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems that have a functional relationship and effect on the operation of mechanical systems.
  • Experience demonstrating knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic controls.
  • Experience demonstrating knowledge of electronics, sufficient to identify and replace defective components, such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards.
  • Experience demonstrating the ability to repair or overhaul major components such as diesel, multi-fuel or gasoline engines, turbine engines, automatic and manual transmissions, drive line assemblies, electrical and electronic systems and accessories, fuel injection systems, and emission control systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of heavy duty systems, assemblies, and parts, including such major systems as diesel, multifuel, and gasoline engines, including supercharged and turbocharged engines; automatic and manual transmissions and gear reduction systems, including those with converters, planetary gears, and power take offs; drive line assemblies including differentials, power dividers, and dual speed axles; electrical and electronic systems and accessories, including ignition systems, charging and starting systems, and wiring and lighting systems; carbureted and fuel injection systems; admission control systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems which have a functional relationship and effect on the operation of mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and their controls.
  • Knowledge sufficient to identify and replace defective components, such as sensors and circuit boards.

COMPATIBLE MILITARY ASSIGNMENT: All applications will be considered regardless of Branch/AOC/FA/AFSC. Incumbent will be required to be assigned to compatible military position within 1 year of selection. The selected individual may be required to attend formal technician school training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires a security clearance (secret) which the applicant must possess or be able to obtain a clearance within one year of appointment. For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license for the state in which they live or are principally employed.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: You will be required to serve a 2-year trial period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, we may consider:

- your performance and conduct;- the needs and interests of the agency;
- whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and
- whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.

Upon completion of your trial period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

Incentive Termination without Recoupment: If you accept a Military Technician (Mil Tech) Permanent position where membership in the National Guard is a condition of employment, your bonus will be terminated with no recoupment as long as you have served at least 6 months of the bonus contract following receipt of the initial bonus payment.
