We are seeking an experienced Senior Integration Developer to serve as a technical anchor and architect-level, hands-on lead for the mission-critical Scheduling Event Bus Platform supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs Telehealth, Scheduling, and Mobile Platform Services (TSMP). This role designs, engineers, and optimizes secure, fault-tolerant event-driven workflows that enable more than 300 enterprise applications to create, route, synchronize, monitor, and manage appointment events. The Senior Integration Developer leads complex Java and Apache Kafka integrations, establishes detailed technical specifications and engineering standards, mentors developers, and drives modernization across containerized AWS GovCloud and Amazon EKS environments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Architect, engineer, and optimize secure, high-throughput event-streaming topologies using Java and Apache Kafka to support real-time synchronization and near-zero service disruption across the Scheduling Event Bus.
· Define Kafka application and platform patterns for topic architecture, partitioning, replication, consumer groups, schema governance, retention, replay, and production performance tuning.
· Lead the development of complex data fabrics, cloud-native microservices, Avro and JSON message schemas, and intelligent event-routing frameworks supporting more than 300 interconnected enterprise applications.
· Develop and review production-grade Java and Spring Boot services, apply enterprise design patterns, optimize JVM performance, and resolve complex concurrency, throughput, and resource-utilization issues.
· Lead the design and implementation of enterprise-scale REST and gRPC APIs, secure service endpoints, and backend integrations across web, mobile, third-party, and VA scheduling ecosystems.
· Own the creation and validation of detailed technical specifications that drive spec-driven workflows, precise code generation, and accelerated engineering through approved AI-assisted development practices.
· Partner with Cloud, DevSecOps, and Site Reliability Engineering teams to design Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD automation, and secure containerized deployments using Kubernetes and Amazon EKS in AWS GovCloud.
· Establish resiliency patterns, including idempotency, retries, dead-letter handling, circuit breakers, backpressure, failover, replay, fault isolation, and automated recovery.
· Design and implement observability capabilities, including metrics, logging, tracing, dashboards, alerts, service-level indicators, capacity analysis, and production diagnostics.
· Enforce Java coding standards, security baselines, and data-governance requirements aligned with HIPAA, NIST, and Zero Trust principles through code, design, and architecture reviews.
· Lead automated unit, integration, contract, performance, and resiliency testing and ensure release readiness for mission-critical integrations.
· Mentor junior and mid-level integration developers, lead technical reviews, establish reusable engineering patterns, and promote continuous technical upskilling.
· Support SAFe Agile and Product Line Management activities by contributing architecture decisions, technical roadmaps, delivery estimates, risk assessments, demonstrations, and stakeholder communications.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
· 7+ years of experience in enterprise backend software engineering, application integration, distributed systems, or integration architecture.
· Deep production-grade expertise in Java development, Spring Boot, JVM tuning, concurrency, and enterprise Java design patterns.
· Advanced production experience with Apache Kafka, including cluster configuration, performance tuning, partition strategies, consumer-group design, retention, and schema management.
· Demonstrated ability to design high-throughput, fault-tolerant event-driven architectures and resilient asynchronous processing workflows.
· Proven experience developing cloud-native microservices in AWS and deploying containerized workloads with Docker, Kubernetes, and Amazon EKS.
· Strong proficiency in enterprise-scale REST and gRPC APIs, secure data fabrics, message schemas, and relational and non-relational database ecosystems.
· Experience with Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD automation, DevSecOps delivery practices, automated testing, and production observability.
· Strong understanding of secure software engineering, least privilege, encryption, secrets management, auditability, and regulated data-handling requirements.
· Demonstrated experience working within a structured SAFe Agile or enterprise Product Line Management environment.
· Outstanding technical leadership, mentoring, code-quality enforcement, architecture decision-making, technical writing, and stakeholder communication capabilities.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED:
· Experience supporting large-scale cloud modernization programs for the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, or another highly regulated healthcare network.
· Development experience with, or architectural understanding of, enterprise Low-Code/No-Code environments, particularly Appian.
· Familiarity with Federal compliance structures, including FISMA, Risk Management Framework lifecycles, Authorization to Operate controls, and Zero Trust security guidance.
· Relevant certification such as Oracle Certified Professional Java SE, Confluent Certified Developer or Administrator, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or SAFe Agilist.
EDUCATION:
· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline; a master’s degree is preferred.
CLEARANCE:
· Must be able to obtain and maintain a federal Public Trust or Secret clearance, as required by the assignment.
WORK LOCATION:
