We are seeking a Senior DevSecOps Engineer to serve as a hands-on technical lead responsible for implementing and maturing secure delivery, infrastructure automation, and observability practices for a cloud-native, event-driven AWS platform supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs. This role leads CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code improvements, strengthens security integration, and advances platform reliability for Kafka/MSK event streaming, RPC-driven services, and real-time WebSocket applications. The Senior DevSecOps Engineer establishes standards, mentors team members, and coordinates with engineering, security, and operations stakeholders.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Bitbucket, and related tools for automated build, test, security, and deployment workflows.
· Develop and govern Infrastructure as Code and machine-image automation using Terraform, Packer, and comparable technologies for AWS environments.
· Lead deployment and operational support of containerized applications using Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS-native platform services.
· Integrate static analysis, software composition analysis, container, Infrastructure as Code, dependency, and configuration security checks into delivery pipelines.
· Establish secure practices for Vault-based secrets management, IAM, encryption, access control, certificate handling, and configuration management.
· Design and mature observability capabilities using Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch, Kibana, and AWS-native monitoring services.
· Automate and support Kafka/MSK infrastructure, including deployment, configuration, monitoring, operational tooling, and recovery procedures.
· Define logging, monitoring, alerting, and performance-management standards that improve platform reliability and operational visibility.
· Automate environment provisioning, release orchestration, configuration management, rollback, and recurring operational activities.
· Support deployment, scaling, and resilience of distributed services and real-time streaming components, including WebSocket-enabled applications.
· Lead troubleshooting, incident analysis, root cause review, and corrective actions for pipeline, infrastructure, security, and availability issues.
· Establish DevSecOps standards, reference patterns, documentation, and governance for CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, security integration, and operational readiness.
· Partner with cloud engineers and developers to embed secure delivery and operational practices throughout the software development lifecycle.
· Mentor junior engineers, guide tooling decisions, identify delivery and availability risks, and promote continuous improvement across teams.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
· 6–8 years or more of experience in DevSecOps, DevOps, cloud engineering, platform engineering, or related roles.
· Strong hands-on experience with AWS cloud platforms, networking, IAM, security services, and enterprise deployment practices.
· Demonstrated experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins or comparable enterprise automation tools.
· Advanced experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and container orchestration using Kubernetes.
· Experience with Docker, automated testing, artifact management, release orchestration, and production deployment strategies.
· Experience implementing observability solutions using Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch, Kibana, CloudWatch, or similar platforms.
· Strong understanding of secure pipeline design, security scanning, secrets management, vulnerability remediation, least privilege, and auditability.
· Experience supporting distributed systems and event-driven architecture; Kafka or AWS MSK operational experience is strongly valued.
· Proficiency with scripting or automation using Python, Bash, PowerShell, Go, or a comparable language.
· Ability to lead technical initiatives, establish engineering standards, troubleshoot complex systems, communicate technical risk, and mentor team members.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED:
· Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs, another Federal agency, or a regulated enterprise environment.
· Advanced experience supporting Kafka, AWS MSK, or another event-driven messaging platform in production.
· Experience with Vault, Consul, Nexus, or similar enterprise platform, service-discovery, and artifact-management tooling.
· Experience supporting real-time streaming, WebSocket-based applications, or other high-availability distributed services.
· Relevant AWS, Kubernetes, HashiCorp Terraform, security, or DevOps certification is preferred, but not required.
EDUCATION:
· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
CLEARANCE:
· Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
WORK LOCATION:
