We are seeking an experienced Senior Cloud Engineer to serve as a hands-on technical lead for a mission-focused, cloud-native, event-driven platform supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs. This role partners with the Solution Architect and cross-functional delivery teams to implement a Kafka/MSK-based event bus, RPC-driven core services, resilient microservices, and real-time WebSocket user experiences. The Senior Cloud Engineer guides design decisions, mentors engineers, and ensures implementation aligns with DevSecOps, security, reliability, and VA enterprise standards.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Lead the design and implementation of AWS cloud-native microservices supporting RPC-based appointment, scheduling, and workflow capabilities.
· Develop and maintain Kafka/MSK producers and consumers and guide engineering teams in reliable event-processing practices.
· Define event-routing and integration patterns, including topic segmentation, schema versioning, replay, idempotency, ordering, retry, backpressure, and dead-letter handling.
· Design and implement secure WebSocket-based streaming services that enable responsive, real-time user experiences.
· Establish resiliency patterns for high availability, fault isolation, recovery, automated rollback, and production readiness.
· Lead technical integration with external healthcare, Federal, and VA enterprise systems through APIs, events, and workflow interfaces.
· Advance CI/CD and infrastructure automation using Terraform, Jenkins, Bitbucket, Packer, automated testing, and secure deployment practices.
· Deploy and operate containerized workloads using Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS-native services with an emphasis on scalability and operational simplicity.
· Implement observability capabilities using Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch, Kibana, AWS monitoring services, and actionable service health metrics.
· Apply secure-by-design patterns using Vault, IAM, encryption, secrets management, least privilege, and Zero Trust principles.
· Lead design reviews, code reviews, technical troubleshooting, and architecture decision documentation for complex platform capabilities.
· Mentor engineers and establish consistent engineering standards for cloud development, event-driven systems, testing, documentation, and operational support.
· Identify performance bottlenecks, integration risks, reliability gaps, and cost drivers and implement practical improvements.
· Support Agile planning, sprint execution, technical demonstrations, and coordination with product, architecture, security, and operations stakeholders.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
· 6–8 years or more of experience in cloud engineering, software engineering, platform engineering, or related roles within enterprise environments.
· Strong hands-on experience designing and operating secure, scalable solutions using AWS cloud services and cloud-native architecture patterns.
· Hands-on experience with Kafka or AWS MSK, including producer/consumer design, topic architecture, event schemas, replay, and production support.
· Demonstrated experience designing event-driven architectures, distributed microservices, asynchronous workflows, and resilient integration patterns.
· Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and production deployment strategies.
· Experience implementing real-time streaming, WebSocket-based, or event-notification capabilities.
· Strong understanding of DevSecOps practices, secure software delivery, IAM, secrets management, encryption, and Zero Trust concepts.
· Experience implementing logging, monitoring, alerting, dashboards, and performance diagnostics for distributed systems.
· Ability to lead complex technical efforts, make sound design decisions, troubleshoot production issues, and mentor engineering team members.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to architects, engineers, delivery leaders, and customer stakeholders.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED:
· Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs, another Federal agency, or a regulated enterprise environment with formal compliance standards.
· Experience with Appian or integration between low-code workflow platforms and cloud-native services, APIs, or event buses.
· Advanced experience with Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch, Kibana, CloudWatch, or comparable observability technologies.
· Understanding of healthcare interoperability, appointment scheduling, case management, or other mission-critical workflow systems.
· Relevant AWS, Kubernetes, or HashiCorp Terraform certification is preferred, but not required.
EDUCATION:
· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
CLEARANCE:
· Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
WORK LOCATION:
· Remote
