We are seeking an Integration Developer to build, implement, and maintain core workflows for a high-visibility Scheduling Event Bus Platform supporting mission-critical Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare and scheduling services. This role develops secure, scalable Java and Apache Kafka integrations that allow enterprise web, mobile, and third-party applications to exchange appointment and scheduling information in near real time. Working within a SAFe Agile delivery environment, the Integration Developer translates approved technical specifications into clean, testable backend code and supports continuous optimization, deployment, and operation of the platform.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·        Design, develop, and maintain Java-based integration services and event-driven workflows supporting VA appointment and scheduling capabilities.

·        Build and configure Apache Kafka producers, consumers, and streaming pipelines that route, synchronize, and log near-real-time appointment data across distributed applications.

·        Implement reliable message-processing patterns, including topic organization, consumer groups, schema handling, serialization, retry, replay, idempotency, and dead-letter processing.

·        Develop and integrate secure RESTful APIs, service endpoints, and data-integration components connecting web, mobile, and third-party healthcare scheduling platforms.

·        Develop Spring Boot microservices and backend components that interact with relational and NoSQL databases and structured message formats.

·        Translate detailed technical designs and interface specifications into clean, well-documented, maintainable, and performant code using spec-driven development practices and approved AI-assisted engineering tools.

·        Create and maintain unit, integration, and contract tests; participate in code reviews; and resolve defects identified during development, testing, and release validation.

·        Troubleshoot message-delivery failures, application defects, and integration issues using logs, metrics, traces, and other diagnostic information, and support root-cause analysis and corrective action.

·        Package services with Docker and collaborate with DevSecOps engineers to support CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and deployment to AWS-based environments.

·        Implement operational logging, monitoring, and alerting capabilities that support platform availability, performance analysis, and production support.

·        Produce and maintain technical documentation, interface specifications, configuration guidance, and operational runbooks for developed integrations.

·        Participate actively in SAFe Agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, sprint planning, demonstrations, and retrospectives, while providing transparent delivery estimates and status updates.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

·        3+ years of experience in backend software development, enterprise application integration, or a related technical role.

·        Strong production-level proficiency in Java and enterprise Java frameworks such as Spring Boot.

·        Hands-on experience developing Apache Kafka producers, consumers, data pipelines, or stream-processing workflows.

·        Experience building and integrating RESTful APIs, microservices, service endpoints, and structured message exchanges.

·        Working knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases, data-access patterns, schema concepts, and structured message formats.

·        Understanding of event-driven and distributed-system concepts, including asynchronous processing, message reliability, error handling, and resilient integration design.

·        Experience with automated testing, software debugging, log analysis, defect resolution, and performance troubleshooting.

·        Familiarity with Docker, Git-based development workflows, CI/CD concepts, and deployment of services to cloud infrastructure; AWS experience is preferred.

·        Experience working within an Agile or Scrum software-development lifecycle; familiarity with SAFe is beneficial.

·        Strong technical problem-solving, documentation, collaboration, and interpersonal communication skills.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED:

·        Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Army, another Federal agency, or a regulated enterprise environment.

·        Familiarity with Low-Code/No-Code environments and configuring workflow integrations with platforms such as Appian.

·        Experience with DevSecOps automation, CI/CD pipelines, and observability or monitoring platforms such as Splunk, Prometheus, or Datadog.

·        Familiarity with healthcare data interoperability models, appointment scheduling, and standard enterprise message-routing workflows.

EDUCATION:

·        Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

CLEARANCE:

·        Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

WORK LOCATION:

·        Remote
