We are seeking a Cloud Engineer to support delivery of a mission-focused, cloud-native, event-driven platform for the Department of Veterans Affairs. This role develops AWS-based microservices, Kafka/MSK event integrations, and real-time WebSocket capabilities supporting appointment, scheduling, and workflow functions. Working within an experienced Agile engineering team, the Cloud Engineer contributes to secure, resilient, observable services and automated delivery practices aligned with VA enterprise and DevSecOps standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·        Design and implement AWS cloud-native microservices supporting RPC-based appointment, scheduling, and workflow capabilities.

·        Develop and maintain Kafka/MSK event producers and consumers that support reliable, event-driven data flows.

·        Implement event-routing patterns, including topic segmentation, schema versioning, replay strategies, retry logic, and dead-letter handling.

·        Build and integrate secure WebSocket-based streaming services that provide real-time user interface updates without page refresh.

·        Develop APIs and integration components that support interoperability with external healthcare and VA enterprise systems.

·        Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure automation using Jenkins, Bitbucket, Terraform, Packer, or comparable tools.

·        Deploy, configure, and support containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes in AWS environments.

·        Implement and maintain logging, monitoring, alerting, and dashboard capabilities using Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch, Kibana, and AWS-native services.

·        Apply secure engineering practices, including IAM, secrets management, encryption, least-privilege access, and Zero Trust principles.

·        Troubleshoot application, integration, and platform issues and support performance tuning, resiliency testing, and incident resolution.

·        Produce technical documentation, configuration guidance, and operational runbooks for developed services.

·        Participate in Agile ceremonies, design reviews, code reviews, sprint planning, and cross-functional technical discussions.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

·        2–4 years of experience in cloud engineering, software development, platform engineering, or a related technical role.

·        Practical knowledge of AWS fundamentals and cloud-native application development in secure enterprise environments.

·        Experience developing APIs, microservices, or distributed applications using one or more modern programming languages.

·        Exposure to Kafka, AWS MSK, or another enterprise messaging platform and a working understanding of event-driven architecture.

·        Understanding of producer/consumer patterns, event schemas, retry processing, replay, and resilient integration design.

·        Familiarity with Docker, Git-based workflows, automated testing, and CI/CD delivery practices.

·        Foundational knowledge of Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, or the demonstrated ability to learn them quickly.

·        Familiarity with application logging, monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance analysis in distributed environments.

·        Understanding of cloud security concepts, including IAM, secrets management, encryption, and least privilege.

·        Strong analytical, documentation, and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, and operations teams.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED:

·        Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs, another Federal agency, or a regulated enterprise environment.

·        Experience with Appian or integration between cloud-native services and low-code workflow platforms.

·        Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch, Kibana, CloudWatch, or similar technologies.

·        Understanding of healthcare interoperability, appointment scheduling, or other mission-critical workflow systems.

EDUCATION:

·        Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

CLEARANCE:

·        Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
