Junior Security Specialist
Alexandria, VA – Full Time – Public Trust & US citizenship required
Description:
The Junior Security Specialist provides essential technical support under the direct guidance of the Team lead. This role focuses on the day-to-day monitoring of security alerts and the execution of vulnerability scans and remediation tasks. The Junior Security Specialist will utilize the agency’s SIEM and Endpoint Protection tools to identify potential threats, assist in the preliminary analysis of logs, and support the Team lead in deploying precautionary measures against malicious code. The Junior Security Specialist is expected to assist in the maintenance of technical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), participate in routine log reviews, and help document the remediation of vulnerabilities found during scanning cycles. The Junior Security Specialist is part of an on-site team ensuring that all security incidents are tracked from identification to final closure in accordance with component policies.
Responsibilities
• Perform day-to-day monitoring of security alerts utilizing the agency's Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) and Endpoint Protection tools.
• Assist in the preliminary analysis of audit logs and security events to identify potential threats and malicious activities.
• Support the Cybersecurity Lead in deploying precautionary measures and mitigations against malicious code or enterprise exploits.
• Review, update, and manage cyber incident tickets in ServiceNow and JIRA, ensuring information accuracy and filtering out duplicate or false-positive alerts.
• Track security incidents from initial identification through to final closure in accordance with component guidelines.
• Execute routine vulnerability scanning cycles using leading industry analysis tools (such as the Tenable suite, Nessus Scanners, IBM HCL BigFix, and Splunk).
• Assist with the documentation and tracking of vulnerability remediation to support agency security objectives.
• Review audit logs and system data to flag critical and high vulnerabilities for the senior cyber operations team.
• Support the creation of Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&Ms) and ensure they are accurately documented in the agency tracking tool (JCAM).
• Assist in creating, updating, and maintaining technical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and security documentation.
• Participate in routine logging reviews and compile documentation for security posture reporting.
• Maintain mandatory compliance records, including annual cybersecurity awareness, records management, and privacy training certifications.
• Familiarity with foundational security operations tools, including SIEM platforms, firewall/IDS logs, and endpoint protection software.
• Basic operational knowledge of vulnerability management software, specifically Tenable/Nessus and ticketing systems like JIRA or ServiceNow.
• Ability to work structured hours within a collaborative, on-site environment alongside Government personnel and other contractor staff.
Requirements:
• Experience: 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience in vulnerability scanning, remediation, and/or incident response.
• Education: Foundational knowledge or academic background in cybersecurity, information technology, or a related field.
• Certification: DoD 8570/8140 IAT Level 2 certification
