Job Description

The Director of Business Development and Capture is responsible for the strategy, planning, and execution of the company's growth initiatives in close coordination with the President and Executive VP/GM by identifying high‑value opportunities, shaping market positioning, and developing compelling offers that lead to program capture. This role collaborates closely with technical, operational, and executive teams to leverage organizational expertise, develop competitive solutions, and drive strong win rates to maintain a healthy pipeline to support company objectives. The Director provides leadership across all business development activities and coordinates closely with the Director of Bids and Proposals to integrate cost, schedule, and technical inputs for proposals, and ensures all efforts align with the company's long‑term growth goals and customer mission needs.

Summary :

Founded by legendary aircraft designer Burt Rutan, Scaled Composites is a 40+ year-old aerospace company continually working to push boundaries, prove out ideas, and influence the future. We are a rapid prototyping and manufacturing facility, designing, building, and testing proof-of-concept and prototype vehicles. We have flown an average of one new aircraft type per year over our 40+year history such as Proteus, GlobalFlyer, SpaceShipOne, Model 401, and Stratolaunch.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff in the department.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations for management staff.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Lead business development initiatives to identify, shape, and qualify new opportunities that support company growth objectives.
  • Leverage technical, analytical, and operational expertise across the organization to drive high‑impact growth opportunities.
  • Support capture and proposal efforts with strategies designed to deliver strong win probabilities and exceptional capture performance.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including team partners, industry associations, and customer decision-makers.
  • Coordinate with Bids and Proposals team to ensure that cost, schedule, and technical content for proposals are in alignment with RFP requirements and company strategic objectives.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to operate independently with minimal oversight while delivering efficient, results‑oriented solutions.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex technical approaches and findings.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with strong organizational and process management capabilities.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory strengths.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate conflict and build effective relationships.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related tools.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret clearance with program access.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years of related experience or 8 years with a Master's; alternatively, equivalent military or business and program experience in lieu of formal business development experience accepted

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to Travel up to 35% of the time.
  • Requires mobility and the ability to bend and reach
  • May infrequently require lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination are required; repetitive hand motion (e.g., to operate computer keyboard)
  • Vision at close distances and the ability to adjust focus for prolonged periods (i.e., computer screen)
  • Ability to remain sedentary or stationary for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to write for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in an office setting for prolonged periods of time
  • May be asked to carry up to 20 lbs. up and down a flight of stairs on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc.
  • Occasional reaching overhead and lifting up to 15 pounds
  • Ability to converse and communicate information with others
  • Occasional exposure to chemical vapors and/or fumes in low non-hazardous concentration
  • Potential to climb up and down steps on a daily basis
