Job Description



  • Independently leads and performs the full range of cleaning duties in an assigned building or other area.
  • Set the pace of work performance for custodial staff.
  • Monitor safety and department rules to ensure safe and orderly workplace for employees.
  • Require the physical ability to handle and control powered equipment and perform user maintenance.
  • Clean, disinfect, and deodorize lavatories, urinals, and toilet bowls.





  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires heavy lifting up to 50lbs. in the regular performance of duties and occasionally more than 50lbs.
  • Employees assigned to this position may be designated as Mission Essential and assume Essential Personnel status during inclement weather/emergencies.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.




Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) CUSTODIAL WORKER LEADER~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common custodial, janitorial, and housekeeping activities within a large hospital setting. I am skilled in loading supply carts and ensuring that adequate cleaning materials and equipment are available to do the job. Cleaning, disinfecting, and deodorizes lavatories, urinals, and toilet bowls - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Occasionally uses and leads the usage of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g. wall washers, industrial-type buffers). Occasionally exerts and directs the exertion of employees in moderately heavy physical effort such as would be required in lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds (e.g., involving setting up and working from ladders and scaffolds). Directs and
    maintains a normal workplace with acceleration when priority circumstances are present.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequently works and leads work indoors, in areas which have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Occasionally, is exposed 'to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in 'stripping floors, etc. and to serious injuries (e.g. broken bones) from falls, ladders and scaffolds.
