Job Description



  • You will plan weekly work schedules to be accomplished by Shipfitter Shop personnel in accordance with program directives and requirements.
  • You will coordinate and integrate shop production work schedules with other shops and codes, Ship Force and military Ship Superintendents.
  • You will provide technical directions over work efforts of subordinates to ensure efficient and effective accomplishments of Shipfitter Shop operations.
  • You will report problems and work stoppages and/or job holdups along with recommended solutions to the Hull Division General Foreman and/or the Hull Division Officer.
  • You will provide administrative supervision/management over Shipfitter Shop operations and promote EEO awareness.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Works aboard ships and submarines and within industrial production shops may require periods of standing, vertical climbing, stooping, kneeling and moving in an out of areas of close confinement.
  • Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • May be required to work at various heights from ladders, scaffolding, buckets, mechanized hi-lifts and platforms, etc. as well as in confined spaces such as tanks and trunks.
  • May be required to work on nuclear systems and participate in RADCON activities as deemed necessary to meet management needs.
  • Must also be able to maintain an IT-II designation.
  • This position may require travel worldwide at which time additional medical screening may be required.
  • You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION:

Extensive knowledge of lofting, ship lines, molded line dimensions, use of Table of Offsets, Unrestricted Operations (URO) inspection and maintenance plan, submarine structural parts and components. Direct the layout, fabrication, assembly, installation, etc. of such structural parts and components. Experience in the organization, management, direction and coordination of all activities concerned with the scheduling and performing industrial/facility functions regarding manpower and material requirements, execution and control, and various workload smoothing techniques. Direct the accomplishments of the Shipfitter Shop operational goals; nurture technical and managerial judgement; initiative; originality; sound communication skills, rapid decision-making capability; and directing diversified personnel while providing optimal allocation of Shipfitter Shop resources.
