Title: Risk Management Specialist
Client: U.S. Navy (OPNAV N16)
Location: Arlington, VA
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Risk Management Specialist to support OPNAV N16 portfolio operations. In this role, you will identify, assess, and monitor risks across the full program portfolio, develop mitigation strategies, and ensure leadership maintains clear visibility into risk posture and mitigation progress. This is a highly collaborative, mission-critical role requiring strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex risk information clearly to senior military and civilian leadership.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Risk Identification & Assessment
• Identify potential risks that could negatively impact the organization's financial, operational, and security position.
• Assess and quantify risks using statistical data and the established risk management framework.
• Perform risk evaluations and risk assessments as per Navy policy.
• Maintain daily awareness of the formal risk register, noting trends and potential delays in mitigation.
Risk Planning & Mitigation
• Develop risk management plans and strategies for the organization.
• Implement the risk management process across the organization.
• Collaborate with different workstreams to ensure risk management strategies are being followed, mitigation plans are progressing, and corrective action plans are being completed.
• Actively track risk status across the full portfolio.
Reporting & Leadership Support
• Prepare risk management reports for leadership and stakeholders.
• Advise stakeholders and senior management on potential risk factors.
• Keep abreast of industry best practices, risk management trends, and regulatory changes that may impact the organization's risk profile.
• Train workstream teams on risk management and promote a culture of risk awareness within the organization.
Key Deliverables
• Prepare the monthly Risk Management Brief and meeting minutes.
• Prepare the monthly Risk Management Progress Dashboard, capturing accomplishments for Enterprise Risk and Transformation Risk, Leadership Needs & Considerations, and Key Risk Insights.
• Prepare and lead periodic Risk Management touchpoints across all workstreams.
• Provide inputs to weekly and monthly reports showing risk movement within the portfolio, challenges needing leadership attention, and key performance metrics.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Proven experience as a Risk Management Specialist or in a similar role.
• Proactive risk identification, assessment, and response planning skills.
• Experience with risk monitoring, control, and mitigation planning.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to build connections across workstreams, facilitating communication and collaboration.
• Meeting organization and action item follow-up capabilities.
• Ability to produce regular performance reports with insightful analysis and recommendations.
• Experience with SharePoint and Power BI.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience supporting DoD, Navy, OPNAV, or federal program management environments.
• Familiarity with DoD risk management frameworks and Navy policy requirements.
• Experience developing or maintaining risk registers in a government contracting context.
• Relevant certification (e.g., PMI-RMP, CRISC, or equivalent).
