Job Description

The Homeland Protection Systems Group works with U.S. Government agencies to develop, assess, and rapidly transition advanced technologies aimed at safeguarding the National Airspace and addressing emerging national security priorities in the homeland. The Group has successfully deployed innovative technology solutions addressing defense challenges for the National Airspace, population centers, and critical infrastructure. We specialize in comprehensive systems analysis, advanced technology development, and rapid prototyping. Leveraging our expertise in complex systems, algorithms, and hardware prototyping, our team of scientists, engineers, and technologists applies cutting-edge techniques in data analysis, predictive analytics, and systems engineering to solve complex Homeland Protection problems. Our mission is to deliver and deploy advanced technologies that strengthen national security in the homeland.

Job Description

The Homeland Protection Systems Group is seeking highly motivated candidates who have a passion for solving challenging problems. As a Staff Scientist in our Group, your responsibilities will include implementing models based on first principles, developing an understanding of complex systems, and making recommendations to inform government leadership on the most challenging problems related to Homeland Protection. You will have the opportunity to work with an experienced, multi-disciplinary team of researchers and engineers to inform the technology designs for complex systems. Our recent areas of research include design recommendations for defense systems, multi-sensor fusion, vulnerability assessments, machine learning applications, and technology concept designs to address capability gaps for Homeland Protection. We research a wide variety of problem domains within our mission area, and are therefore looking for staff with an innate curiosity to solve diverse problems. We encourage engagement with the academic and government community at-large through publications and conference attendance. We collaborate with Groups across MIT Lincoln Laboratory to provide our team members with access to unique datasets, state-of-the-art resources, deep subject matter expertise, and challenging technical problems that will give you the opportunity to use your skills to make a real-world impact.

Qualifications: Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, or related discipline. In lieu of a PhD, a Master's degree and 5 years' relevant experience will be considered

Requirements:
• Ability to quickly learn new technical areas and apply that knowledge effectively to solve challenging mission problems
• Ability to clearly present complex technical concepts to a wide spectrum of audiences
• Proficient at software languages for physics based modeling (e.g., MATLAB or Python)
• Desire to lead exploration into new technical areas in support of the Group's mission focus areas
• Ability to develop, implement, test and evaluate novel algorithms and concepts
• Intellectual curiosity and a passion for solving challenging problems
• Ability to lead multi-disciplinary technical teams to successful project execution

Desired Skills
• Interest in National Security
• Knowledge of sensors and sensing modalities, physics of sensor operation
• Expertise in processing large datasets and data exploitation techniques
• The ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects at once

Recent Graduate Hiring Range: $145,200 - $170,000

Experienced Hiring Range: $145,200 - $220,000
