Job Description

Duties

  • You will perform analyses to determine radionuclide identification and quantity in a variety of samples such as mud, water, air, waste material, work areas and the human body.
  • You will develop and recommend control measures or changes in procedures to cause compliance which are reviewed by a senior employee.
  • You will perform basic cleaning and adjusting of radiation health equipment.
  • You will prepare reports of dosimeter results, investigations, analyses, and surveys including assessments, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • You will assist in inspections and surveillances of operations performed by other organizations to determine compliance with requirements promulgated by the Shipyard and higher authorities.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • You must be capable of accessing nuclear work areas.
  • Lighter activities, such as walking over rough or swampy terrain, lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds, bending, reaching, stooping, and crouching are also frequent activities.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • The work may involve frequent, strenuous activities such as climbing vertical ladders, staging, or scaffolding in dry-docks, vessels and outside of buildings.
Qualifications

The Upward Mobility Program is a unique job opportunity. This program is designed to provide Department of Navy employees career growth opportunities who have potential but do not presently meet the Office of Personnel Management qualification requirements for this position. The entry level for this position is GS-09 with a full performance level of GS-12.

Knowledge of employees selected may vary and will require the development of an individually tailored training plan to assist them in qualifying for the full performance level of this position. Eligibility requires that the employee be performing satisfactorily, complete all training requirements, acquire the requisite qualifications and have met time-in-grade eligibility for career ladder promotions.

This recruitment is open to current UIC 4523A employees who, in addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, at the GS-07 (or higher) grade level, or equivalent.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual.
Applicants must possess:
A bachelor's degree or higher in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus
OR
A combination of education and experience with courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education
OR
Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above.

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify for the GS-09 Grade Level with the following education or combination of both education and experience:
Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree
OR
Successful completion of two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree
OR
A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.
