Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Assisting in gastroenterology procedures; Preparing patient for gastroenterology procedures; Setting up equipment and/or instruments for designated procedure. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Gastroenterology.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Additional information
- Assists the Gastroenterologist and/or the GI Surgeon in various clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic and/or emergency procedures
- Assists with endoscopic biopsies and polypectomies.
- Provides patients an initial preparation checklist and provides an explanation of the procedures to minimize fears and to ensure their cooperation.
- Selects, sets up, adjusts and operates equipment for designated procedures.
- Moves the mobile procedure cart, equipment cart and portable monitor to the ED, ICU or OR.
- Prepares the equipment for operation; and, assists the gastroenterology physician in the procedure with the equipment.
- Positions and drapes the patient in accordance with clinic standard operating procedures.
- Operates the automatic endoscope reprocessing system to disinfect equipment.
- Disinfects equipment to prevent patient infection and cross-contamination by disassembling the scope, brushes parts and dips into a solution prior to putting into the washer.
- Prepares reports on examinations, equipment and utilization, workload, supply status, consumption and related matters.
- Maintains inventory according to standards.
- Performs all setup of equipment, checks instruments/equipment for completeness and proper functioning prior to beginning procedure; and troubleshoots equipment during procedures as necessary.

- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire)..
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Tuberculosis (TB): This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
- Position is subject to include weekends, overtime, on call, and/or holidays.
- Required to complete a preemployment medical examination and may require an annual physical or medical surveillance examination.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.

- This position may have Occasional Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement.
- Position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.
